[WardFive] Ward Five Council on Education leadership transition

Hello Ward 5!

It is with excitement and a bit of sadness that I write you this email. On May 18th I started a new chapter in my life when I took on the role of Chief Student Advocate in the Office of the Student Advocate which is located within the DC State Board of Education (a role that was newly legislated by the DC Council in 2013). The goal of my office is to provide assistance and outreach to student, families and communities in a way that empowers them to be fully engaged in the public education landscape and thus continues to challenge the notion that public education is not only a public asset and right but is something that should be community-focused and informed. For more information about our office please contact me at student.advocate@dc.gov.

Taking on this role has prompted a transition in the leadership of the Ward Five Council on Education.  As much as I have loved being the president of this awesome organization, I am excited to introduce you to the new interim president, KaShawna Watson. KaShawna, who is a lifelong Ward 5 resident, will take on this role with the support and co-leadership of Mary Melchior, who many of you know because of the phenomenal work that Mary has done of behalf of the Ward 5 community in many areas but particularly public education for many, many years!

I am excited and honored to introduce the community to such awesome individuals who I know will be an passionate education advocates and an extremely positive force for public education in Ward 5 and citywide. I definitely encourage you to continue to work closely with them as our organization continues to strive to improve the quality of education in Ward 5 while engaging our schools and communities to be a part of this movement.

Again, it has been such a pleasure to serve the community in this way and I look forward to continuing to be active in the Ward Five Council on Education under this awesome new leadership.

Best,
Faith Gibson Hubbard
Former President of the Ward Five Council on Education
