I want you to know that there was no joke playing going on. I saw it at midnight while helping someone who had not been able to find her boat after the race go pick up her boat. It was left alone in a parking lot that was not the place where the boats were expected to be dropped off. It's the same boat that John paddles. After heading down to the party and talking with an instructor who said last he saw John, he was still searching for his boat, we called Tom to see if he could get ahold of John to confirm if it was his boat or not. We couldn't get ahold of John. At that time we went back to see if it was still there and made a decision to not leave it alone in a parking lot and try to return it to it's owner - who we believed to be John. In the light of the morning, we checked the contents of the boat and confirmed that it wasn't John's. I immediately went to Teeter's bulletin board and posted a note with my phone number asking the owner to call. He had already made arrangements with the race coordinators to take the boat and hold it for him and he would be back two weeks later to pick his boat up. We were more than willing to take it back to DC for him, but the race coordinators had it and we respected what the owner asked for.
I spoke with the owner the next day and explained the story and he said he was just thankful it was found. His assumption was that it had fallen off the trailer on the way down the Cheat road.
I am glad he got it back, and I am very sorry for having made a mistake. I didn't do it as a prank or joke, and want to make that clear.
