· DC Emancipation Day. April 16 is DC Emancipation Day, the day when enslaved people became free in DC. A series of events are planned to take place in the city that day, including a Parade. To see a full list of events, please visit: http://www.emancipationdc.com/
· Congress Lobbying Day. On April 16, a number of DC residents and activists will spend the afternoon part of the day lobbying members of the House of Representatives asking House members to sign up to co-sponsor Bill H.R. 317, the New Columbia Admission Act. Since its introduction earlier this year, the Bill has the support of over 110 co-sponsors. We will start meetings at 1:00PM and will continue until 4:30PM. If you are able to join us, please call the office or contact Ms. Elinor Hart at hart1651@juno.com to sign up. Sign up to be on the Parade in the morning, and later, join us in the US Congress.
· Memorial for Ms. Providencia Paredes. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy aide and lifelong DC resident Providencia Paredes’ Memorial will be held this Saturday, April 11, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Annunciation located at 3810 Massachusetts Avenue, NW in Washington, DC. Ms. Paredes died on March 18th at the age of 90. DC Councilmember Anita Bonds will introduce a DC Council Ceremonial Resolution on the DC Council that will be presented, along with a Shadow Congressional Delegation Resolution at the Memorial. · April 28th Special Election. Remember that Wards 4 and 8 will have a special election coming up on April 28th, 2016. Here is information for early voting: In-Person Absentee/Early Voting Locations: One Judiciary Square (441 4th St, NW) April 13 - April 25 8:30 am to 7:00 pm (Closed April 16 in observance of Emancipation Day and closed Sunday, April 19). Ward 4: Takoma Park Recreation Center (300 Van Buren Street, NW) April 18 - April 25 8:30 am to 7:00 pm (Closed Sunday). Ward 8: Malcolm X Elementary School (1351 Alabama Avenue, SE) April 18 - April 25 8:30 am to 7:00 pm (Closed Sunday). Election Day: Tuesday, April 28, 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. · April DCiReporter. The edition of the DCiReporter, playing on DCTV (Comcast 95 / RCN 10 / Verizon 10) for April features: 1) DC Journalism Job Fair 2) Honoring Monsignor Romero 3) DCFDW Women Submit 4) Ward 4 and 8 Special Election 5) Washingtonians speak about DC Statehood. You can watch the current show, as well as previous editions, on-line at: http://dcireporter.com/dcireporter-tv-show/. There is a very good piece of an event honoring the soon to be Saint, Monsignor Romero. Monsignor Romero was an Archbishop of El Salvador that was assassinated in 1980 while fighting for the poor of that country. Congresswoman Norton, Mayor Bowser, Cardinal Wuerl, and other city officials gave remarks at the event. DC became one of the first places in the world, outside of his home country, to offer a high level ceremony for Monsignor Romero.
· Ward 8 Candidates Forum. There will be a Ward 8 “Emergency” candidates forum on return citizens & violence. The forum will take place on Monday, April 13th, @ 6PM at Emanuel Baptist Church, 2049 Ainger Pl SE, Washington DC 20020. The forum will be hosted by Denise Rolark Barnes of the Washington Informer, and the moderators will be Rock Newman of the Rock Newman Show, and Clinton Yates of the Washington Post.
