I believe that there are other long term plans for that site for development. The RFK Parking Lot sits right across from where there is a big picture of a beautiful development coming along that part of the Anacostia. It makes no sense that there would be a beautiful site there and nothing across but a bland parking lot across from a Golf Course.  They need to stop with this nonsense about doing things in parts and haphazzardly.  This plan sucked from the beginning and it continues to do so as they try to make it work.

What about the overhead power lines that's needed to power the trains.  Who is responsible for that and how much does it cost??  Where is the money coming for that?   Has that been worked out and is even within the law to put those lines there.  As it stands, H streets looks beautiful coming down from the Bridge behind Union Station.  Why are we going to Screw that view up with Powerlines.

Also, No ones utilizes a space like that Frontage for something as non-community oriented as a TROLLEY BARN!!  If that is ever to be utilized for other than Open Green space for our kids and Us, it should be something more!!  Maybe we should put it at GRAY's house!!  Or, maybe we can park the buses from Union Station there so he can hear the buses coming and going all night.

And PLEASE STOP WITH THIS WORK TRAINING/JOBS BS!!  This could happen anywhere the _______ barn is put - that is if it will even happen.  Obviously they will be able to jump on the trolley and go to "the barn" for "job training" - where ever it may be put.

Maybe Congresswoman Norton will volunteer to help after reading Internet posts.  Maybe the mayor will see if their are other options to appear concerned and deliberative.

This argument is not compelling. Reps from DDOT stated they did not want to work with Congresswoman Norton to obtain permission to use the site for a car barn. Tearing up Spingarn's front lawn because you don't want to work with our delegate is ridiculous and irresponsible.

The reason the RFK site is off limits (among others) is that it is controlled by a federal restriction on use.

Good piece.  One correction.  Harry Thomas took $300,000 not million.

Vincent Gray's Justification For Spingarn Car Barn Just Isn't Adding Up

Sometimes I get confused when it comes to politicians. At what point are they expected to make concessions for a few over the benefit of the whole? And is there an actual threshold in how expensive a project is when a politician should stop considering other ideas and settle for the lesser of two evils?

Mayor Vincent Gray apparently is hellbent on getting a car barn built on the campus of a public school. Though not in the happeningest part of town, the expanse of green grass at Spingarn High School at Benning Rd NE and 26th Street NE gives pause for a moment before cro ssing the bridge to the chaos of Minnesota Ave NE or the mosh pit of H Street. It's not an place where you'll toss the ball with your dog, but it's a reprieve from how crowded DC is getting.

If nothing else, it's a public high school where tomorrow's generation go to prepare for the future. It's a place for learning, sacred grounds, a tiny piece of real estate tha t should be protected for the kids.

Gray says there are no other options though there are huge parking lots, underused asphalt-covered areas near RFK just around the corner from Spingarn. I'm not so sure how they'd build it, but there are suggestions to use Hopscotch Bridge as an alternative. If nothing else pretend more publicly that those ideas were considered and deemed absolutely not workable. The residents near Spingarn and parents of its students have vocally expressed their out rage of the plan. Don't condescendingly offer a benefit of up to 35 jobs for Ward 5 residents when the car barn is built. I don't think they're asking for more jobs; they're asking for peace and quiet.

Gray goes on to say that there will be more car barns across the city, even potentially one in Georgetown. I'm not sure how this is supposed to alleviate people's irritation to the Spingarn location. Just because they're building a gas sta tion in a part of town where I don't go doesn't mean I'd welcome one next to my home.

When Gray was running for mayor, I remember hearing he deliberates on decisions, takes all the notes in the world, sometimes takes too long to make a decision, takes in everyone's input, he's measured, he accommodates, he collaborates, he finds a middle ground.

If Gray did in fact flesh this decision out, he sure is having a difficult time getting anyone to believe it. If Spingarn is  the only feasible decision, so be it. But convince me.

If putting the car barn at Hopscotch Bridge will cost $15 million more, isn't it worth it in the long run? Meanwhile we're still wondering how Harry Thomas stole $300+ million from funds designated for the youth, Harriette Walters stole $48 million over 20 years, officials in the tax office cut $2.6 billion from the proposed taxable value of more than 500 commercial properties after settling with owners, and so on and so forth.

Though I live in the area and would vote against using Spingarn as a car barn location, I'm not completely against it. Even if my little one attended school there I'd be open-minded about it. I would even endorse it, reluctantly, if I was convinced it was the absolutely best, only and right thing to do. There are many schools in more congested, high traffic and more dangerous locations. I get it.

But 35 new jobs, $15 millio n dollar savings and other places in DC will be getting one as well simply aren't good enough reasons.
