[WardFive] DPW To Observe Christmas, New Year's Day Tues., Dec. 25, Tues., Jan. 1

DPW To Observe Christmas, New Year’s Day Tues., Dec. 25, Tues., Jan. 1

Solid Waste, Parking Services Affected.

The Department of Public Works announced today that services will be suspended in observance of Christmas (December 25, 2012) and New Year’s Day (January 1, 2013).

Trash and Recycling Collections:  For the weeks of December 24 and December 31, 2012, DPW will make its regular Monday trash and recycling collections and Tuesday’s collections will be suspended in both once-a-week and twice-a-week collection neighborhoods.  Trash and recycling collections will resume Wednesday.  In once-a-week neighborhoods, collections will slide one day, so Tuesday’s collections will be made Wednesday and so on through Saturday when Friday’s collections will be made.  In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday and Thursday collections will follow their normal schedule.  Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.  Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Parking Enforcement:  DPW will not enforce parking meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions Tuesday, December 25, and Tuesday, January 1.  Normal enforcement will resume Wednesday, December 26, and Wednesday, January 2.  Also, DPW will not tow abandoned vehicles when the holidays are observed.   DPW will enforce parking regulations Monday, December 24 and December 31.

Ft. Totten Transfer Station:  Ft. Totten, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Tuesday, December 25, and Tuesday, January 1.  Bulk trash drop-off services will be available Wednesday, December 26, through Friday, December 28, 1 pm to 5 pm, and Saturday, December 29, 8 am to 3 pm.  The same schedule will be in place during the week of December 31.  The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is Saturday, January 5, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays).  To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables on Thursday, December 27 from 1 pm to 5 pm.  DPW does not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor is in place on the first Saturday.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Leaf Collections:  Between December 17 and 29, leaf collections will be made from most “Area B” neighborhoods, except December 25.  In Ward 5, Area B is scheduled for collections to be made between December 24 and January 5.

Holiday Tree Collections:  Holiday trees and wreaths will be picked up curbside from December 31 to January 12. Remove all decorations and place the greenery in the treebox space in front of your home. Please do not put the trees in plastic or cloth bags.  Trees collected between December 31 and January 12 will be recycled.  Any trees not collected by January 12 should be set out with your trash to be picked up as space in the trash trucks allows over the following weeks.

Residents can use DPW’s Web site – www.dpw.dc.gov – to view the 2012-2013 leaf collection schedule by selecting Leaf Collection and clicking on “Check Leaf Collection Status in Your Neighborhood” (http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/) and enter your address.
