A former supervisor for the District's summer jobs program must register as a sex offender for 10 years after she admitted to giving birth to a baby boy fathered by a high school student in the program.
Bowie resident Loni Haggins, 30, who was also a teacher's aide and cheerleading coach at Wilson High School in Northwest Washington, must also complete 100 hours of community service, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.
A one year prison sentence was suspended by D.C. Superior Court Judge Russell F. Canan on the condition Haggins successfully complete a year of probation.
Haggins pleaded guilty in October to one charge of attempted second-degree sexual abuse of a secondary education student.
Prosecutors said Haggins met the then-17-year-old victim, a student at another school, while working for the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School.
She began a sexual relationship with the teen shortly after the program ended while she was still employed at Wilson High School -- a relationship that continued through April 2012, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, Haggins attended the teen's basketball games, gave him rides from school, treated him to dinner and bought him shoes, clothes and other goods.
The boy even brought Haggins home to meet his family at Thanksgiving dinner, police documents said.
All the while Haggins and the student had sex nearly every day, mostly at her Bowie home but sometimes at the boy's home, according to documents.
When the boy decided to end the relationship in December 2011, prosecutors said Haggins became pregnant twice and informed the victim he was the biological father.
The student broke up with her, but continued to have sex with Haggins until April 2012. After the second pregnancy, Haggins gave birth to a boy, and the student's mother notified police, according to prosecutors.
Haggins was arrested in September. Paternity tests confirmed the student is the father of Haggins' child.
