Re: [WardFive] Re: [ward5] Councilmember: Close NoMa nightclubs (WTOP)

Our pols depend upon ignorance of the citizens and voters of this city and so far they have not been wrong ... you would do well to listen to Mr. Ransom, as he has in-depth knowledge and experience with this whole charade we call "planning," and "zoning,"    The developers are major contributors to political campaigns ... so ...they get anything they want ... to the commercial developer, DC IS "Alice's Restaurant." ... (...you can get anything you want.... at "alice's restaurant."

Specific to this -- it was a decision based on lots of factors. The reality was that the decision was made because what Tregoning needed this for wasn't ready to come to fruition as yet.  When the time comes, if this place is really needed, the govt will be relocating all that nonsesnse.  Let that patch be built on NY Ave/Bladensburg/West Virginia.

I keep telling this intelligent young man that there is more to meet the eyes than folks teach you in school -- whether it is HBCU or IVY.  Unless, he knows more than he is telling, these types of responses are telling.

I truly hope that he gets that DDot does not make decisions on planning a CITY.  THEY IMPLEMENT.

I can't speak for other issues buy as it relates to this one OP actually wanted it done differently than how DDOT and DPW did it.  They had a different design but DDOT went with there own.

As for other issues with OP I can't speak for each and every issue. I do know however that there have been times when OP and DDOT or DPW have disagreed. Another example would be all of those DPW vehicles being stored off of West  Virginia Avenue. She has had an issue with that and still does.

Great point Tony -- let's close all the clubs who are close to residential neighborhoods that individually or collectively attract / let out 2000 or more people --

Hello Kathy,

You must have missed the Commercial -- Mr. Bellamy is a French Model -- says the "our residing ward 5 source" -- at least that why we should all believe that Tregoning had nothing to do with that decision!!

It is amazing how real and actually straight forward the discussion was about the Gun Laws earlier when there was no CM to offend but when it came time to discuss the something that would offend Wells, the dialogue changes.  How about this:

1.  With these establishments gone, the property can be developed into the huge buildings around them and/or

2.  Certain things shouldn't be near this community.  Interesting, these places were there long before NOMA.

Maybe Wells wants to have them relocated to certain areas in Ward 5!!

Mr. Bellamy says that a lot after regurgitating Ms. Tregoning's agenda.

It isn't her alone making decisions.  For example the parking spaces along L street in NW which were removed for bike lanes wasn't her decision but the decision of DDOT and DPW. Many think it was an unwise decision as well.

Agree.  Sometimes I think she was held over to do the bidding solely for business and total anti-car interests.  Hope she proves me  wrong.  I believe there can be a respectable balance between business and community interests.

I liked the way former OP Director Ellen McCarthy undertook her duties; she actualized the Mayor's agenda while actually listening to citizens. I am very concerned that Ms. Tregoning is leading the land transformation task force with a seemingly myopic agenda. Why facilitate a task force when you do not value citizen input?

I am very concerned about the approach Ms. Tregoning is taking regarding development in the District. I along with Ms.KPW, Scott Roberts and several other Ward 5 residents attended the OP presentation regarding the zoning rewrite at Galludet. Ms. Tregoning seemed unable to answer basic questions regarding her recommendations. Now, I understand she has conferred with Irv Nathan to try and disenfranchise the ANC's because she does not really want to hear from citizens.

Actually, Councilmember Wells raises a good point; nightclubs do not belong in residential areas. While OP Director Harriet Tregoning is trying to figure out how to disenfranchise the ANC's by ignoring the "great weight" provision and forcing residents out of cars, she should instead draft zoning recommendations that would protect neighborhoods from commercial disruption.

Wells thinks this will get him votes? Has McDuffie released a statement about the shooting yet?

Councilmember: Close NoMa nightclubs

Tuesday - 3/12/2013, 2:29pm ET

WASHINGTON -- A District council member is speaking out after more than a dozen people were injured in a drive-by shooting early Monday morning.

"I'm definitely going to do my best to remove the nightclubs from the area," says Tommy Wells, speaking about the nightclubs Fur and Ibiza.

The clubs are located within a block of where 13 people were injured on North Capitol Street. No one was killed in the incident.
Police have not determined whether the shooting was related to club patrons or whether it involved a dispute between rival neighborhoods. But Wells says regardless, the area has become too residential to support such establishments.

"Releasing 2,000 to 3,000 to 4,000 people between the two clubs at night really does have a major impact on an area that's no longer industrial," he says.

Wells is the chairman of D.C.'s public safety committee.
