RE: [WardFive] New Metrobus Benefits for School Transit Subsidy Participants/Sign Up Now

FYI.  I just got off the phone with a representative in the School Transit Subsidy Office.  Please note that the Eligibility Letter for School Year 2013-2014  will not be available until August 16, 2013 for bus/rail transit commencing September 2013 until the end of the school year ($30.00 per month).  If your child's commute includes metro rail, you are required to pay the regular fare for that leg of the commute for the last week in August (first week of school for DCPS).   However, certain conditions apply if your child attended 2013 summer school.  Contact the number below for specifics about charter schools.

***PUBLIC NOTICE***

New Metrobus Benefits for School Transit Subsidy Participants

(Washington D.C.) The Council of the District of Columbia recently passed legislation that eliminated Metrobus fare charges for students participating in the District Department of Transportation's (DDOT) School Transit Subsidy Program (STSP) on official school days.

The "Ride Free on Bus" program will allow District school students to use Metrobus without charge Monday to Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., during the regular 2013-2014 school year. The "Ride Free on Bus" program ends after 8 p.m. on weekdays. After 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, and on weekends, students will be required to use their purchased monthly rail / bus pass or a 10-trip bus pass for discounted Metrobus service during the regular school year.

The "Ride Free on Bus" program begins Monday, August 12, but students can only utilize the program once their schools have opened for the 2013-2014 school year.

For this new program, DDOT and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) are requiring D.C. Public School (DCPS) students to use their DC One Card. Charter and private school students will also be required to use a DC One Card for the new Metrobus program and to access other student discounted services, but will be allowed to apply for a DDOT Student Metro Travel Card to use in the interim until they receive their DC One Cards.

For more information, please call 202-673-1740 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday to Friday) or email DDOT's Customer Service Clearinghouse at ddot@dc.gov.
