Summary: With a total of $6.4 million in support, 35 DC-based organizations are set to begin training in-person assistors who will be tasked with helping DC residents enroll in health insurance through DC Health Link, the District's new online insurance marketplace.
Editor's Note: We are pleased to announce that DCPCA, Community of Hope, La Clinica del Pueblo, Mary's Center, MetroHealth, Inc., Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan DC, Unity Healthcare and Whitman-Walker Health are among the 35 DC-based organizations to receive funding through this grant program.
2. How much of a subsidy will you get in Obamacare? Here's an estimate
By Julie Appleby, Kaiser Health News, August 14, 2013

Summary: A recent Kaiser Family Foundation study reports that approximately 48% of adults who purchase health insurance via new online marketplaces will be eligible for federal subsidies to help offset costs, with the average subsidy estimated at $5,548.
3. Dwindling paramedics, higher response times endanger emergency medical care in DC
Associated Press, The Washington Post, August 15, 2013

Summary: Citing a shortage of ambulances, insufficient training and poor strategy, assistant to the general president of the International Association of Firefighters Lori Moore-Merrell has called DC's EMS system "one of the worst in the country."
4. Kidney disease persists in black community
By Stacy M. Brown, The Washington Informer, August 14, 2013

Summary: According to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney disease is the ninth leading causing of death in the U.S., with minorities and the elderly at greater risk for developing the disease. Even more worrisome is that of the approximately 26 million Americans living with kidney disease, the majority are not aware that they have it.
5. Talking scales and telemedicine: ACO tools to keep patients out of the hospital
By Elizabeth Stawicki, Kaiser Health News, August 15, 2013

Summary: Working to reduce health care costs and improve health outcomes, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) across the country are maximizing health information technology to coordinate patient care.
6. Unmet patient needs as the focus of a new regulatory pathway
By Gregory W. Daniel, Brookings, August 13, 2013
Summary: Hoping to find new ways to treat high-risk patients, some health researchers are making a case for more "off-label" use of prescription drugs.
7. Doctors look for a way off the medical hamster wheel
By John Henning Schumann, NPR, August 14, 2013
Summary: From hiring health coaches to making virtual appointments, primary care doctors around the country are finding new and innovative ways to improve patient care, while at the same time improving their own job satisfaction.
8. Afraid to get tested? Slow down and think about it
By Jan Hoffman, The New York Times, August 13, 2013
Summary: Suffering from what psychologists call "health information avoidance", many patients let fear of outcomes prevent them from getting critical screenings tests, including those for HIV, colonoscopies, mammograms and more. Hoping to curb this trend, researchers are encouraging health care providers to help patients think more thoroughly about the pros and cons of testing, while reducing snap decisions may be the best method for reducing anxiety.
9. Another central Obamacare provision delayed
By Brian Hughes, The Washington Examiner, August 13, 2013
Summary: While some components of the Affordable Care Act are progressing as expected, others are falling behind. Most recently, regulations that would cap out-of-pocket expenses incurred by customers has been pushed back to 2015.
10. Adults whose moms were obese may die sooner, study says
By Kim Painter, USA Today, August 13, 2013

Summary: According to a new study, children born to obese mothers are 35% more likely to die prematurely and 29% more likely to be hospitalized for heart and cardiovascular diseases.
