On July 10, the Council of the District of Columbia passed legislation that eliminated Metrobus fare charges for students participating in the School Transit Subsidy Program (STSP) on official school days. This new benefit, the "Ride Free on Bus" program, will allow District school students to use Metrobus without charge Monday to Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to 8 p.m., during the regular school year, starting Monday, August 26.
Students will be required to "flash" their DC One Card to the bus operator to board the bus during this time. DDOT and WMATA anticipate having the DC One Card "flash" option for students in effect until approximately February 2014, or until future notice.
After 8 p.m. on weekdays, students will be required to use their purchased monthly rail/bus pass or a 10-trip bus pass for discounted Metrobus service during the regular school year. The cost of the student pass products remains the same. A student monthly pass for unlimited trips on Metrorail and Metrobus is $30, a 10-trip rail pass is $9.50, and a 10-trip bus pass is $7.50.
On August 16, online enrollment in the academic year transit subsidy program will become available for students to enroll, and they may begin to purchase monthly rail / bus passes for their DC One Card at Metro Sales Offices.
Students must be instructed to print out a new Academic Year 2013 Transit Subsidy Eligibility Letter and visit a
Metro Sales Office with their letter and DC One Card in order to buy the monthly pass, 10-trip bus and 10-trip rail pass products.
Once this process is complete, the transit subsidy will be applied to their DC One Card and activated for use on the first day of the following month. For example, if a student purchases a monthly pass on August 18, then it will be applied to their DC One Card for use on September 1.
Accessing School Transit Subsidy Program Benefits
All DCPS students are required to access the STSP through the DC One Card Program. Information on obtaining a DC One Card can be found by visiting http://dconecard.dc.gov and clicking on "Get a DC One Card."
Renewal Process for Monthly Passes
From August 16 to the end of every month, students may renew their monthly passes at any Metrorail station's farecards machine. Alternatively, students who register their Smartrip number from their DC One Card through WMATA can purchase their monthly pass online using a credit or debit card. If this is done before the end of the month, students will retain access automatically beginning on the 1st day of the following month and will not have to visit a Metro Sales Office.
If students wait until after the 1st of the next month, they will have to print out their eligibility letter again and visit a Metro Sales Office again to renew their pass.
Process for Purchasing Trip Based Passes
At this time, students who purchase 10-trip bus or 10-trip rail passes must visit one of the four Metro Sales. Offices in the District with an eligibility letter, and may purchase up to two of each of these passes at any one time. If a student has one or more trips on the card, then they do not have to show an eligibility letter to purchase another 10-trip pass at the Metro Sales Office.
