Mayor Gray to Join Members of 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington Commemorative Committee to Announce Events
Local Committee Holding Events Emphasizing District’s Connection to Historic March
WHAT/WHO: Mayor Vincent C. Gray will join members of the Mayor’s 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington Commemorative Committee to announce the committee’s plans for marking the upcoming anniversary of the historic march, which took place on August 28, 1963 and featured Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
The announcement is part of Mayor Gray’s regular Biweekly Press Briefing.

BACKGROUND: Earlier this year, Mayor Gray appointed a 22-member committee, led by former Ward 1 Councilmember Dr. Frank Smith and former Council Chair Linda Cropp, to serve as a local liaison for the organizers of the national 50th anniversary commemoration and to call attention to District residents and District-related causes – including voting rights and local autonomy – that were integral parts of the original March on Washington for Jobs and Justice in 1963.
