This Saturday August 24^th from 4:30 – 6:30pm: Summer Spiritual Cinema Series

The Summer Spiritual Cinema Circle Series presents short films and feature presentations that have wonderful life themes that make for great conversation. The third film in the Summer Spiritual Cinema Circle Series will be Snow Walker, written and directed by Charles Martin Smith and adapted from the story, "Walk Well My Brother" by Farley Mowat.  This is a film about a hot-headed former WW II fighter pilot turned arctic bush pilot who finds himself and his passenger fighting for survival after his plane crashes because of a mechanical failure.  The passenger is a sick Inuit woman whom the pilot agreed to take to the nearest hospital in exchange for some valuable ivory.  The pilot's arrogance gradually dissipates as he learns that though the woman is sick, it is she, not he, who is better cut out to survive in these northern climes.

Labor Day Weekend 2013: ECAC Building Campaign Launch Events

The ECAC is launching a campaign in the 10th year of the building's purchase to restore and rebuild parts of our building that have suffered through heavy rains, hurricanes, high winds, and aging since 2003.  We'll also take this opportunity to strengthen our community connections through our Community Wall Project, telling the stories of the community to all who visit. This permanent art installation on the front retaining walls, once they are rebuilt, will lead us into a new phase of growth.  We will officially launch this campaign on Labor Day Weekend with the following events:

 

Saturday August 31^st from 10-5: Volunteer Day

We will be working on indoor and outdoor projects to spruce up the center for upcoming activities.  You can register by emailing sylvia@ecacollective.org or call (202) 462-2285.  If you have carpentry, drywall repair or masonry skills and can donate time for small projects at any time, please contact us.  Those who volunteer on August 31st will receive an ECAC Service Coupon for each hour worked, which can be credited towards the Benefit Party.

 

Saturday August 31^st at 8:00pm: Benefit Party

Party with us as we welcome Bomani Armah, poet,hip-hop artist and producer most known for his 2007 viral video hit "Read a Book".  Also performing will be the Coolots, the original all female Rock & Soul band hailing from the Washington, DC area.

Sunday September 1^st from 3pm – 11pm: ECAC Showcase & Luci Murphy Birthday Bash

Celebrate the best of ECAC with a gathering of fun and entertainment.  Our lineup will feature a demonstration of the African-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira Angola, the young DC Dynasty Cheer All Stars, Grammy Nominated Progressive Hip-Hop artist Christylez Bacon, Plus a special birthday celebration and performance by Luci Murphy - a D.C. native who has been singing songs of liberation and freedom over the last 50 years in English, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, Zulu, Arabic, Hebrew, Swedish, Cherokee, and ki-Swahili.  Your entry fee will be a completed pledge card, indicating the amount you will commit to the 2013/2014 Building Campaign.  Donations can be made with cash or check or on the website.

Saturdays from 1-3:30: DC Salsa Class
Don't miss the Cuban Salsa Classes taught by Barbara Bernstein of DanceInTime every Saturday from 1:00-3:30 pm.  It's a fabulously fun class that addresses all levels of dancers.  This beautiful and lively style of Salsa was featured in the movie "Dance With Me," starring Vanessa Williams.  It's done by couples in a circle, with frequent partner exchanges so everyone dances with everyone else. It blends all the fun of dancing with the spirit of a team sport!  Class is "drop-in," so you pay only on the days you come. Droopy the Broke Baller ( www.myspace.com/thebrokeballer ) and Mister Mysterious Dwayne B ( www.myspace.com/dwaynebrown ) present the legendary "Spit Dat" weekly open mic event! Dwayne B produces fine made-to-order crochet creations which are available weekly at our Thursday night "Spit Dat" set (www.myspace.com/scarfbydwayne) .  Note: We do not have an age restriction for our "Spit Dat" open mic event. Sundays from 10:30am-12:00pm: Tai Chi – Beginners Class

Tai Chi is a time-tested set of exercises that gently improves the health of internal organs and fosters greater balance and mind-body connection. Tai Chi Chuan is also a form of moving meditation and is an effective system of self-defense. This class, taught by Sylvia Robinson will teach the Yang style 88 movement set.

Sunday August 25^th and every 4^th Sunday from 12:30-2: A Course in Miracles Study Group  *** Changed to 1X per month ***

The Course in Miracles is a self-guided spiritual teaching tool completed in 1972.  It states in its introduction:  "The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.  This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:  Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God."  The curriculum the Course proposes is carefully conceived and is explained, step by step, at both the theoretical and practical levels. It emphasizes application rather than theory, and experience rather than theology.   This study group will focus on the Manual for Teachers, one of the sections of the text.
