Norton Remembers James E. Bunn

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today made the following statement on the passing of James Bunn, a D.C. civic and business leader.

"The deep sadness I felt upon learning that my friend, civic and business leader James Bunn, had passed away was relieved only momentarily by one last memory.  I was grateful that Mr. Bunn had lived to attend the opening of the first federal building east of the Anacostia River earlier this week.  Mr. Bunn was at the opening of the Coast Guard headquarters he helped shepherd, just as he had been one of the leading businessmen east of the river for decades.  James Bunn was more than a dedicated community activist.  He concentrated his energy and keen ability on business development, where talent and background like his was particularly needed.  Mr. Bunn did not simply talk about developing business, he showed residents it could be done, opening his own Bunn building and other businesses.

"Added to the respect James Bunn won in this town as a professional and business leader, was our admiration for him as a family man and for his devotion to his two sons and his daughter, my former chief of staff Sheila Bunn, who now serves in a similar role for Mayor Gray.  James Bunn made his mark in the eastern part of this city, but his legacy of business and civic leadership was city-wide, crossing the Anacostia."
