Last week, in a letter from DC Public Schools, members of the HD Woodson community were notified Dr. Darrin Slade would be appointed acting principal of HD Woodson. After expressing their concerns in a meeting with Instructional Superintendent, Thomas Anderson, the community was informed the final decision had been made and their voices were ignored.
As principal, Mr. Richard Jackson, is passionate and committed to the success of all students, as he did an excellent job this past year revitalizing HD Woodson HS. Unfortunately, Mr. Jackson will be taking an immediate leave due to personal health matters for an undetermined period of time. We wish Mr. Jackson well and eagerly look forward to his return. During his absence, we are requesting the vision and initiatives he has put in place be allowed to continue. This will be the first year Woodson has received STEM funding, and there has been a great deal of planning, prodding, and preparation to reach this milestone towards a robust STEM program. To best support this transition, we are asking that those members of his current, very capable leadership team be given the opportunity to carry out his vision during his absence. Strong and consistent leadership must be the foundation for HD Woodson to continue to build upon its successes and give the students a strong start to the school year. HD Woodson Senior High School has had 3 principals in 3 years. After the opening of the new school, Principal Jackson was chosen as the instructional leader after a selection process involving parents, teachers, administrators, students, and community leaders. During the same process, Dr. Slade was interviewed and determined to be the least suitable candidate for Woodson's leadership. Consequently, it is only to be expected that he would not be well received when appointed over much more qualified candidates and the existing leadership structure.
When parents and community members invest in our public school system they should know that their efforts will not be summarily dismissed, for it is their engagement that determines a school's success. Under Principal Jackspn, HD Woodson has established a school culture built on collaborating with parents and community members for the benefit of the students. DCPS has unilaterally ignored the Woodson community's right to chose the principal they deemed best to lead their school. The PTSA and community lobbied for and won the STEM Funding and will continue to be the foundation that supports Woodson's future success. Please show your support by signing the HD Woodson PTSA and
