Hello everyone,
I was just putting he perspective on Chief of Staff's pay being as "higher" than the CMs and so "low" for some of the other folks working in those offices as it related to work being performed.
First of all, if this was the CM's personal business, he/she would not be paying a CoS as that money would be coming out of his pocket and he/she wouldn't see the need to have that position if it came out of his family's pocket. Like I said, there are only a few people working in those offices and they all need to report to the person in charge of their department who in turn report to their boss the CM - as he/she makes the decisions. However, since it is how the govt. works, those are the positions that are utilized and the pay is what it is.
The reason that some of the other CMs are OK with really paying their CoS more or even that much is that these CMs are MINTING income elsewhere so it doesn't matter to them and maybe they are the actual CM's behind the scene with a good front man relaying messages and skillful on the Dias where "politics" are being played out instead of the best interest of the city.
As to the lower salaries, other than the Legal position, none of the rest are "degreed" positions. As Aaron said, Nolan inferred and I assumed others think this way - the govt. is really a public service environment and has public service pay. The reason that I used the Trash removers position is that we are looking at actual work being performed - constant movement - vs in office work where folks utilize lots of time no doing work related activities.
As I stated above, if this was the CM's personal Business and the money came out of his/her family's pocket, actual work being done would be looked at differently. That's why I asked about quantifying the work vs. the pay vs the work actually being done.
That being said, we do understand how the govt. works and should work.
As to The Budget of the City as it relates to operation of the City is the Mayor's responsibility with the CM's input - which lots of this squabble ends up being about "personal projects". So mixing apples and oranges with job responsibilities are not my speciality. Actually, if they are to really do "budget" and operate as a private industry, lots of folks won't have jobs and we definitely don't need that - so l think that we would settle for seamless functionality. So, I don't care what people are making but just wanted to put some realism on "Pay" and Work being performed and "hours" being put in. If you really want to see reality tv on how this work, install cameras.
By the way, wasn't Kwame Brown former CoS the highest paid when he was CM just previous to him being Chair? Who knows that #.
Rob

Jerry,I never said government is working. I just said that folks don't know how it is supposed to work. There is a big difference. If you carefully read some of the statements about who does what and what folks should be doing that is obvious. As for your comments about what folks shouldn't be able to do. I'm going to leave that alone as I keeping my word.Eric J. Jones

It is truly sad.Eric J. Jones

Nolan,If these CM's "give their lives over to their work", I would agree with you. But anytime that CM's continue to work under "part time" regulations, and have other positions "consulting" or otherwise making up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, then there is a huge problem - one that they all continue to ignore. In addition, other than heading a department, what are the job responsibilities of the others who work for any CM and how do we quantify their pay vs. job description vs. hrs. being put forth - especially when we have such a Through duplicating Supporting Mayoral Staff and Govt. services devision to handle things. Maybe, I don't understand the job description and pay scale - just being straight forward. The reason I say this is that I have Trash Collectors who ride in the hot sun/freezing cold/rain and smell trash all day everyday and get paid less comparatively speaking for WORK when I see people in suit and ties often sitting around shooting the sh**. People should really just appreciate thier position and pay. If you want more, find another job that pays and has more challenging/focused job responsibilities. It is a tough world out here.Feel free to use our CM's Staff and educate me. How much does the rest make and what are their job descriptions? And why can't I hire 2 times as many folks to do their job at different times of the day so no one has to put forth "so many" "uncomfortable" hours.I am surprised as you are usually more complete in your analysis - where is the other $.01 of the $.02.Actually, a good Secretary should be able to coordinate all the workings of a "Chief of Staff" in a CM's Office - that is if you have a CM who has experienced at running operations, and who is working this position as full-time. If a CM has good people running other departments and reporting directly to the him/her, then a good "secretary/administrative assistant" works. ie. - Mrs. Mobley - she is head of constituent services and quite capable of running that deparment. So everyone knows, this is not taking anything away from Corey's ability or any other CoS as Corey is a smart and capable person and I am sure other CoS are as well. And if you look at the Job Description of the CM and the amount of people he/she has working for him, he really just needs a good secretary to move with him as well as coordinate with the head of his departments. At the end of the day, he is held responsible and runs everything and should be reported to directly.Anyways, until they make the rules stringent to discourage corruption, they are just pimping the possibilities!!Rob Ramson

If you want good people, you gotta pay them. It's the job of us voters to put people in their that are worthy of those salaries. And the people making $100k+ are one issue, but looking at the amount folks who are a little further down make - and knowing how many hours they put in - I think some of those numbers are kind of low. Especially when people are able to leave government and cash in in the private sector, seems like we might want to think about raising the bottom 1/3rd salaries instead of harping on councilmbers and CoS who essentially give their lives over to the work.Just my $.02
