McDuffie Stands Behind the Residents of Ivy City

Washington, DC – Today, the D.C. Superior Court will hold a hearing on the lawsuit filed by residents of Ivy City against the District of Columbia.

In July, Ivy City residents sued the District and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation to block the construction of a bus depot being placed on the site of the historic Alexander Crummell School.

Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie (D – Ward 5) offered the following statement in response to the Ivy City lawsuit:

"I fully support and stand behind the residents of Ivy City in their efforts to stop the Gray Administration and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation from converting the historic Crummell School into a charter bus parking lot.

"Ward 5 is desperately in need of balance in its land use, as well as enhanced economic development opportunities. I believe that with the right vision, planning and resources, Ward 5 can become the source of major urban revitalization. It is because of issues, like the conversion of the Crummell School, that I introduced the Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force Act. This legislation would create a task force, led by the Office of Planning, to develop a plan for the revitalization of Ward 5's industrial land. The bill directs the task force to assess the feasibility of expanding land uses to accommodate operations such as recreation, vocational training, sustainable urban agriculture, art studios and business incubation.

"Rest assured that I will continue to fight for and with the residents of Ward 5 to make sure that our Ward is no longer viewed upon as the path of least resistance for industries that the rest of the city rejects. Like other District residents, I know that the residents of Ward 5 care about and want to see quality development in their community –but community-driven development strategies that lead to economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction.
