Mr. Lee,
I want to believe that most kids are taught this at home. However, there must be a reason for this type of behavior as people grow - similiar to any behavior that is good or bad -- it is mostly environmental. I believe that when you have a "superior feeling/better than others" that runs throughout your body, these thoughts would tend to overflow into your own life and the way you look at things in your own personal sphere.
Maybe White Men (as that is all I have experienced with this behavior of not washing their hands) feel that they are that clean that they don't have to. I just don't understand as I can't imagine after flushing with your hand at urinals that you walk out without washing them. I actually use a tissue, my foot. I actually am glad to see the automatic flush bathrooms.
But -- there has got to be a reason for such a disparity in hygene!!
I am going to give a few examples that I noticed --
a. Men's coats -- sometimes there is so much dirt on coats that you cringe. Take a look at this with winter coats on White Men vs. Black Men and even their pants.
b. In the locker room/shower of the gym, I see the same huge disparity of White men vs. Black men walking around in their bare feet and even going into the urinal area without slippers/shoes.
Maybe it is psychological -- I don't know but I have always wondered why. The only reason is that I could come up with is that for years, living conditions forced folks to be more careful about cleanliness (making it a focused concern) and maybe that was a way to protect from getting sick and having to visit a doctor -- which access may have been limited or not affordable -- which would make this an economic issue and we would then have to look at if it is any different in lower economic Whites - but even many of them seem to think/feel that they are better/cleaner!!
