Part of their job is to understand the extenuating variables and connect the dots to implement the programing to correct the issues. When one child in a household is doing great and the other is not, parents figure out a way to bring the other along. Those who have parents who are willing (especially in the stay at home mom bracket) let them take on some more of the "school spirit".
We know that Parenting is an issue - so we need to adapt to that environment as that is not changing anytime soon -- so it should not be utilized as an excuse anymore. I have thoughts on that but one thing for sure, show me a child that is doing well and I will show you a parent who is proud -- proud parents show up. Our job is to get that fixed at all costs and That's what DCPS gets paid to do. Bad parents is just an excuse for folks not being able to do their job.
Anyone can teach kids who are willing to learn -- the challenge and why folks get Paid like Central Office is to bring the underperforming kids and schools up to par. That's a large part of why they were hired. SIX YEARS since RHEE and no fix in sight. Failure to implement the necessary programs and to bring about improvement is a huge form of attack -- it is tied to WACKED JOB PERFORMANCE!!!

Rob and others,
Who exactly are attacking the school? Or maybe thats why the kids dont show up because they are under attack...
Low attendance is NOT the DCPS's fault -- its yes Im going to say it -- its the PARENT's FAULT. Aint no way in God's green earth my mother (a single two job working barely keeping her eyes open to help with my homework) would let me miss more than a week of school without me having my @ss handed to me.
Stop putting the burden on DCPS to get your kids to skool ppl. Thats just unsmart.
Seems like in DC, if we build it they wont go!!! *shrug* Sad to see Spingarn go, but but that gold course, and that area is at the edge of H Street and its revitalization ... you could not think that **bulldozers** were not coming for sure?!?!?

Rob,I don't have kids, but I was a kid a few years ago and attended public schools and I'd like to see a local high school thrive in the community. Unfortunatey, 40% of Spingarn students have missed over a month of school due to unexcused absences- that can't all be blamed on the government. If I'd missed over a month of school as a kid, my parents would have been sure to quickly remedy that.Sure, the DC public schools have a lot of work to do. But, if the parents of the students aren't making sure they attend school, where does the fault lie for that?Matt

Matt,Do you have any kids?? Maybe you missed it -- our community does not want this attacking approach on our Public School System -- ask 90% if Black Folks over here. Why would we give away our Prime Real Estate -- a School in a Cluster like this that sits across from a Golf Course, a great football and track and field facility with Tennis and Basketball Courts (in desparate need of renovation) to a Charter School. DCPS should refocus the feeders system to that location and we won't have to spend 100+ Million on renovation.Isn't the Job of Central Office of DCPS to implement a School Curriculum and environment that will encourage students to attend and learn. Where is that program. Maybe we should set the incentive/encourage this enrollment.RobOn Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 11:42 AM, Matt Ashburn <matt@mattashburn.com> wrote:
If true, it's not surprising, unfortunately. It has a long history of poor performance and a student body that has high truancy. And, the school has appeared in numerous reports detailing these issues but it hasn't turned around much. It's sad to hear this news, but hopefully it will encourage parents to ensure their children attend their new school. I also wonder what will become of the school itself- will it be sold to a charter school like the city did with Webb?Matt
