DPW to Observe Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd

Sanitation services will be suspended for the day.

Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed on Labor Day.

“Summer Collection Hours” End on Tuesday.

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will observe Labor Day, Monday, September 3; therefore, sanitation services and most parking enforcement will be suspended and will resume on Tuesday, September 4.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, September 4.

  • Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Thursday’s collections will slide to Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday’s and Friday’s collections will slide to Wednesday and Saturday.
  • Street sweeping will be suspended Monday and resume Tuesday, September 4.

The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed Monday, September 3 and reopen Tuesday, September 4 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

“Summer collection hours” will end over the Labor Day weekend, with collection crews starting their routes at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, September 4. Collections had begun an hour earlier at 6:00 AM throughout the hotter summer months.

Streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Labor Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays, streetcar parking enforcement is between 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM. Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes September 4.

Kevin

Paddle New Zealand!

The Kaituna, one of New Zealand's finest pieces of whitewater, is renowned worldwide for its amazing beauty, quality rapids, as well as the great community vibe in the small town of Okere Falls. It has a 1.2 mile stretch of waterfalls & rapids, which will will be our base river in NZ. Below the commercial stretch, the river tightens up in to narrow gorges with plenty more excitement, before opens up and flushes out in to the ocean. Not bad, eh?

Join Rhys and the LAKS crew in New Zealand, Feb 14 - 23, 2019!

cheat_training_group Fall Training starts this week

Hi LAKS students,

Just want to let you know that Fall training starts this week. There are two spots left- you can chose Tuesday or Wednesday, and two Gauley trip dates left (Gauley Fest is full).  If you want to register you can do so here: https://calleva.org/liquid-adventures-kayak/intermediateadvanced/trainings/fall-training/

Here is an overview of the program:

Objective This is such a fun program, designed to get you comfortable picking and hitting lines as well as nailing rolls in big water. Whether your goal is the Upper or the Lower Gauley, you will be challenged on some beautiful sections of whitewater.

Weeknights When you register, you will sign up for a weeknight- Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. Weeknight meetings are 5:30 - 7:30. We will email you each week to let you know where to meet. Location depends on water level.

Saturdays Saturday meetings are 9-11 am for the whole group. They start this Saturday 9/1 and end 9/22. Saturdays will be run as a workout (think Cheat Training), the weeknights are more of a clinic. These days are designed for downriver runs like Little Falls or the gorge.

What Boat? You don't have to have two boats for this training but I know that most of you do. Ideally, you will bring a playboat or slicey boat to the weeknight practice and the boat you are planning to run the Gauley in to the Saturday practice.

Who is Teaching? Tom, Steve-O, Bobby Miller and Rhys Jensen-Jones are your main instructors.

Plans for Gauley Trips You will also signed up for a Gauley Trip date. The whole group will run the Lower Gauley on Saturday. On Sunday some will get redemption on the lower, some will be ready to tackle the Upper on Sunday. We will leave from the take out to head home late Sunday afternoon.

More Training It is important to be in good shape when you are on the river- healthy heart, strength to pull you through rapids, and endurance. LAKS always recommends doing strength training and we are partnering with Outlier Athletics to get you a special deal on fitness training. Outlier is a new gym in Potomac, on Falls Road, started by Michael Lengyel. Michael worked with competitive ice skaters and the PWRC athletes, training at the Bookmont gym. We have a Sunday and Monday evening classes set up at a special rate for LAKS Students. Check out the attached flyer. Michael is cc-ed to this for any questions.

I hope to paddle with you this fall!
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Ashley McEwan

The 30th annual Great falls Race will be on the Fish Ladder! The river flow is forecast to drop below 5 feet by this evening, and continue dropping rapidly Saturday. Due to the changing river level, we will delay the start of the Race until around 10:30am to allow competitors more time to practice, and safety more time to set up.

There will be no slalom event this year. Instead, competitors will be able to participate in both the overall (long boat) class and the < 9 foot boat class.

For a Fish Ladder race: the start is an island river right 50 meters above The 1st Slide, near the start of the Tight Quarters channel. The Finish is river left below the 5th Slide at the entrance to Sandy Beach Channel.

Competitors will be required to navigate the Fishladder channel and stay in the left channel down the 4th slide. We will have safety at the bottom of the Back Canyon but your time will not count if you run Bitch Monkey by accident. The Top 10 competitors will be invited to race in the Finals at around 12:00noon. The fastest qualifying times for Women, C1/canoe, hand paddler, short boat, etc. will be recognized at the awards party, but all paddlers in all crafts are competing against each other to make the Finals. For Finals, all lines and channels are open, and the rest of the field will be asked to set safety.

Everything will be explained at the competitors safety meeting at 8:30am on race day.

We are under extra scrutiny from the National Park Service this year. It is important to the future of this event that we demonstrate our ability to manage the race and spectators. EVERYONE, INCLUDING RACERS AND SAFETY, MUST REMAIN OUT OF CLOSED AREAS. The rule is simple: NO ONE is permitted to leave the boardwalk from the after bridge that leads to the overlook. In other words, once you cross the first bridge across Fishladder, you MUST STAY ON THE BOARDWALK. No one is allowed to jump the railing and hike out onto the island along the river right side of Fishladder.

NOTE: We will have a US Park Police Officer on site throughout the event. She/he will be there both to monitor our permit compliance, and as a resource to us. If you see any violations of the above rules, or if there are unruly spectators, please don't hesitate to notify the officer.

All persons near the river, especially on the shore and on islands in the riverbed are asked to keep their helmet and PFD on throughout the entire event regardless of their involvement.

Great Falls Race: Spectators & Photograhers

Please read!

The race will take place on the Maryland side of the river, within C&O Canal NHP. The best viewing will be from the Canal Towpath.

BRIDGE: Keep the bridge clear for park visitors. While we realize that this is the best race viewing, we need to maintain open access to all pedestrians and other visitors.

PHOTOGRAPHERS do not have special permission to access closed areas.

NOTE: We will have a US Park Police Officer on site throughout the event. She/he will be there both to monitor our permit compliance, and as a resource to us. If you see any violations of the above rules, or if there are unruly spectators, please don't hesitate to notify the officer.

Please follow the direction of our volunteer Marshals!
