[WardFive] Events coming up: Gun rally, DACA forum, Mayor Barry statue

Today, students and staff at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School went back to continue with their lives; as best as they can.  We can’t say the same for the 17 lives that were lost on February 14th, 2018, nor can we say it for the almost 100 lives that will be lost to guns TODAY.  While I applaud any discussion that aims to fix the gun problem we have in our country, I don’t believe bringing more guns into schools is the solution to keep us safe.  Our children also go to churches, parks, movie theaters, etc., are we also going to place more guns there as well?  The problem won’t go away by placing more guns in schools, at best, it would only shift the problem.  So I hope you will join a bunch of us once again on Monday, March 5th in front of the White House from 11AM to 1PM to demand a real solution to the gun problem we have.  If you have any questions, about this effort please email:  everymonday52@gmail.com.

Please also join me, and many other community partners concerned about DACA, this Friday, March 2nd at the University of the District of Columbia Community College Bertie Backus Campus (5171 South Dakota Ave NE, Room 303, Washington DC, 20017) from 6PM to 8PM, for a DACA forum with a panel that will discuss the issues surrounding DACA.  There are many moving parts here: A 5-year old program put in place by President Obama, terminated by President Trump, pending court decisions, and awaiting Congressional action.  Please join us for a DACA discussion, and the impact it has on our community, particularly for those directly impacted by the program.   See attached flyer for more information.

As we close African American History month, please come out and join the city leadership for the unveiling of a statue to honor the Mayor for Life, Marion Barry.  A 10-foot long statue of former Mayor Barry will find a permanent home on Pennsylvania Avenue.  There is much to celebrate as we honor Mayor Marion Barry.  The event will take place on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 in front of the John A. Wilson Building (1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW), from 11:30AM to 1PM.  Please arrive early as outdoor seating will be very limited.

Thank you.

cheat_training_group Cheat Training starts next week!

Hi Cheat Trainers!

For those of you who are not in Cheat Training this year- we will be using this email list for Cheat Training logistics for the next few months. You are welcome to remain on the list. Settings can be adjusted at the bottom of this and every email.

Welcome to Cheat Training 2018- the most wonderful time of the year! We will be emailing with information about workouts, technique, meeting spots, etc. on this list. The Cheat Elite group may receive emails with specifics from your instructors.

The staff met last week and we are all so excited to paddle with you. The stoke is high. Here is the list of the amazing staff/ fearless leaders for this year along with meeting times and locations.

Cheat Training (Wednesdays and Saturdays) Tom McEwan, Bobby Miller, Ashley Nee, Sandrine Deglin, Charlie Miller. Assisted by Brian DeCicco, Kelly Holland, Jim Wilson, Bob Pollock

Wednesday nights (March 7 - April 25) are attainments from Angler's Inn. You can arrive anytime between 5-6 pm. Our first meeting, March 7th, is before Daylight Savings begins. For this day only, we are meeting 1 hour earlier. Please arrive between 4 - 5 pm.  Check in in the lower lot with Steve-O. We may have a specific workout for you or things to focus on depending on the level. We also want you to paddle with a partner. This is especially important until you get up to one of the Chutes where an instructor will be located.  Staff will be at different locations along the Gorge to give you tips and help with rescues. Please ask questions, let them know who you are and how you are feeling. We will all turn around and race back to Anglers at roughly 7:45 (6:00 the first week). It is important for the group that everyone stays out until turn around time. If you get stuck and can't make a move consider carrying or head back down to the Chutes and try different moves. These workouts are great for strength training and boat control.

4 Saturdays in March (3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31) are downrivers on the Potomac. We meet at the Sycamore Parking area on Clara Barton Parkway at 9 am. (38°57'28.9"N 77°07'52.8"W) We will shuttle you up to Great Falls, MD and paddle from Sandy down to Sycamore. We will be done around 12:30 pm. This workout focuses on endurance, race technique, and pain tolerance ;)

4 Saturdays in April (4/7, 4/14, 4/21, 4/28) are trips to the Cheat Canyon. More info about logistics for trips will follow but plan for all day trips out to West Virginia.

Everything is subject to change depending on river level. We will email out any changes so be sure to follow this email chain.

Steve-O's Cheat Elite (Tuesdays and Saturdays) Steve-O McKone, Eric Brooks, Andrew O'Neil
Pablo's Cheat Elite (Thursdays and Saturdays) Pablo McCandless, Patrick Murray, Andrew O'Neil

Weeknights are 6-8 pm at Anglers. For the first week please meet at 5 pm in the lower lot of Anglers. Saturdays are 9 am - 12 pm meeting at Sycamore Island parking on MacArthur Blvd or Lock 5. Steve-O will email you about this option. If you need to switch a weeknight you may. Please try to let us know in advance.

Everyone- You will need to have a long boat and cold weather paddling gear. The minimum requirement is a drytop, neoprene pants, river shoes, and gloves or pogies. Resources for this stuff: Paddle Prattle, Facebook page Potomac River Gear Exchange, this listserve, NRS

Thanks for signing up for Cheat. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback along the way. See you next week at Anglers!

[WardFive] Street Sweeping Resumes March 1

Residential Mechanical Street Sweeping to Resume March 1

Motorists are urged to obey signs restricting parking

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will resume residential mechanical street sweeping on Thursday, March 1. To ensure streets are swept thoroughly, motorists are asked to obey the signs posted with the days of the week and hours of the day when parking restrictions will be enforced. The fine for violating this restriction is $45. Signs posted along street sweeping routes indicate that the program runs from March 1 through October 31.

“Our street sweepers, many of whom call the District home, take great pride in keeping our city clean and beautiful,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “In the last fiscal year, DPW’s crews removed upwards of 4,300 tons of litter from our streets.”

To remind motorists of the restrictions, DPW will issue warnings between Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 9, 2017 to vehicles parked during the sweeping periods.

Parked vehicles may be towed to allow the sweepers access to the curb lane. Generally, parking is prohibited for two hours (9:30 am to 11:30 am or 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm) while sweeping is underway.

As a reminder, District drivers can now receive immediate notification if their vehicle has been towed, relocated or booted. To find out how to enroll in DPW’s Tow and Boot Alert Program, please click here.

DPW provides essential city services in two distinct program areas: environmental services/solid waste management and parking enforcement. Both contribute to making District streets and public spaces clean, safe, attractive and accessible for all residents, businesses, commuters and visitors.

Kevin

Ward 5 Dems,

We hope your schedule will permit you to join us for both meetings.  Note that one of our strategic goals is to conduct voter registration and education training to be followed by actual voter registration drives and other special events to achieve higher voter turnout for the June 19 primary and the November General Election.

As fellow Democrats we need your support.  If you can' t come out tomorrow, but want to get involved in this important endeavor, please send Chair Gordon-Andrew Fletcher an email.  We know how busy everyone is, but consider signing up for at least one future event.

If you can't join us tomorrow, we do hope to see you at our regular membership meeting on Monday 2.26.  You have been great since September as our attendance has dramatically increased.  Please keep coming as we need your support and encouragement.  As Democrats, we need to take back both Houses, the one in Congress and the one on Pennsylvania Avenue.  Let's ride the Blue Wave and get it done.  See announcement below.

It won't be a good boat for the attainment workouts but it is a forgiving boat for the runs down the Cheat in April. Reply here or call or text (301)606-9434 if you are interested.

Hi Everyone,
My muscles are already hurting just thinking about Cheat Training.  :)

A friend of mine will be a first timer and is looking for a long boat.  He's a big person, so needs one of the large-ish long boats.  Anyone selling??

[WardFive] DC Snow Team to Pre-Treat Roads

DC Snow Team to Pre-Treat Roads with Liquid Brine Ahead of Saturday’s

Wintry Mix

The DC Snow Team will be pretreating the District’s primary, secondary and National Highway System routes this evening starting at 8 p.m. with anti-icing liquid brine in advance of Saturday’s forecasted blend of snow, freezing rain, and sleet. The National Weather Service is forecasting a wintry mix that will begin Saturday afternoon and last late into the evening. In addition to the pre-storm anti-icing operation, the DC Snow Team will be monitoring the storm throughout the weekend and is prepared to treat roads with rock salt should it be necessary. Residents and motorists can register to receive important weather alerts from the District on their devices by signing up for AlertDC at alertdc.dc.gov.

“Starting pre-treatment early allows our crews to get ahead of this storm to ensure that the District’s roads are safe for motorists throughout the holiday weekend,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter.

This winter season the DC Snow Team has ramped up its use of brine as an anti-icing technique. Liquid brine, which is made up of water, salt, and beet juice, helps keep snow and ice from bonding to the pavement and reduces the amount of time needed to remove snow from streets. Brine has also been shown to decrease the corrosion of infrastructure.

In addition to using more brine, another way the DC Snow Team is working to decrease its salt use is by enhancing the calibration training provided to salt truck drivers and supervisors. When salt trucks are properly calibrated, drivers can adjust the application rate depending on the type of storm. This ensures that our salt trucks are not unnecessarily applying extra salt to our city’s streets. In terms of an overall trend, the District is using less salt; although yearly totals may fluctuate depending on the number and severity of storms.

The Department of Energy and Environment is also part of the District’s Snow Team, providing input and assistance on preventing and minimizing environmental impacts of routine snow and ice removal operations.

To prepare for the overnight wintry mix and morning commute, residents are encouraged to heed the following tips:

  • Take Metro as an alternative to driving.
  • If driving, do so cautiously and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.
  • Keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow. Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.
  • Be aware of hazardous road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in appearance and give the driver a false sense of security on the road.
  • Drive and walk carefully on bridges, ramps and other elevated structures which can freeze before the roadway.
  • Cyclists should use caution and avoid biking directly on snow or ice.

The District’s Snow Team is committed to a quick completion of plowing and salting along major roads and residential streets, which in turn means a faster return to normal traffic flow and earlier resumption of trash collection and other city services. Residents concerned about the treatment or plowing of specific roads should call the Citywide Call Center by dialing 311. For more information about DC’s snow program and preparing for winter weather, or to see where District Snow Team plows are working, go to snow.dc.gov.

Kevin
