I'm sorry to miss Dickerson again. You probably think I don't want to paddle the UY but I think I do want to. I've promised to be at mom and dad's Sunday. Mom is failing slowly and we're trying to let her stay at home.

Hi Upper Yough Trainers and others!

This coming Sunday, not Saturday, is our Dickerson Workout.  There will be space in the Open Session, registration is available online.  Please meet at the gate at 1:15 pm for a 2-4 workout.  The reason for the time change is the Jr National Slalom Team Trials will be held at Dickerson this weekend.

Sunday June 9th is the Summer Feeder Slalom Race.  This is a novice race open to the community.  There are adult slalom and plastic boat classes.  This is a really fun way to use the slalom skills you have been working on, support the local racing scene, and get beaten by incredible 14 year olds. Registration at http://potomacwhitewater.org/event-registration/?ee=12

Finally, thanks to all of you for the overwhelming support of the FUNDaNEE epic journey.  The Gazette wrote an article pre-adventure and Ashley Wrote up a recap on the wild events of that night (scroll down to the second entry).

See you all on the river soon, I am sure!  It is too hot to be any where else.

Hi: Robert:

I hope all  is well with you and your family.  Respecting your decision to not seek re-election in so many of the organization that you have been a strong leader, leads me to think that this was a monumental decision -- and, one that may have been predicated by extenuating circumstances.

Wishing you Peace, Love and Support in the next phase of your life.  Please always count on me as a friend.

Subject: [WardFive] Letter to Ward 5

Dear Ward 5 Neighbors,

There comes a time in one's life when you have to face the realities of life.  That time has come for me.

The Bloomingdale community and Ward 5 have been home to me for over 30 years.  The house I live in is where my mother and her sister were each married.  There are community, Ward, and family memories I will always cherish with fondness and love.

All of my life I have tried to serve others and to be a positive guidepost for young people.  Community service is a principle I value and believe.  I am blessed God has allowed me many opportunities to champion the causes of justice, equality, due process for all regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, or political ideology.   However, I will always be a proud Democrat.

I tried my best to be fair to all and to respect all, even those who strongly disagreed with me.

Throughout my varied roles of service; as a teacher, a U.S. military service member, and a community activist, I fought for the rights of others and for the dignity of all people.    I am truly proud of my commitment and support for D.C. statehood and the right for full District congressional representation.

Over the years I have marched for civil rights, protested injustices against young people, workers, and seniors, walked with my neighbors against drug trafficking in the Bloomingdale/Edgewood/Eckington communities.  I have testified in strong support for high quality District public education, against governmental secrecy, over-reach, and even been arrested for District self-determination.  I believe and remain a dedicated fighter for good government and community cohesion and inclusiveness.

I believe in fighting for what is right and just.  Even, if I had to stand and fight alone.

Yet, through and above it all, I tried to be loyal to my principles, to my core beliefs of justice and due process, and dedicated to the people of the District of Columbia.  While I did not back down from a political or public policy challenge and fought hard to persuade the truths as I thought they were; I never engaged in the practice of anonymous personal character assassination to hurt people or for entertainment. Whatever I said or did, I stood up and put my name to it.  In an era before the current public and media outcry for openness, transparency, ethics; I saw it as the decent thing to do.

I tried to be faithful and dedicated to Bloomingdale, Ward 5, and to the people of the District of Columbia.  I believe I have.

My personal and community journey of service has enriched me and made me I hope worthy of God's grace and mercy.  However, the time has come for me to focus on something spiritually more valuable and precious; my health and my family.

It is with great love and affection I announce I will not seek re-election as Chair of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee.  In addition, I will step-down as a Vice-Chair of the Ward 5 Council on Education, Inc., and Vice-Chair of the 5th District Citizens' Advisory Council, Inc.

If there is a closing thought I would share, I hope you will find it in the links below:

Please know there is still and always will be a fight in me.

There are many people who I would give a shout out to for their encouragement through the years.  I cannot name them all; however, I would like to single out two people for special recognition as leaders; they are Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Chairman Phil Mendelson.

As a Washingtonian and as a proud Democrat, I believe Mayor Gray and Chairman Mendelson have provided consummate municipal leadership and management oversight of District affairs.

Finally, to the three who mean the most to me, my wife, my son, and my goddaughter, I'm coming home.  I love you all.

I have nothing against Mr. Rogers and don't know enough about him but it looks like Eric J. and I are on the same page with the support of Silas Grant. As for what I have become to know of him, Silas is an awesome Young Man!!!  All for youthful leadership when the person has a solid foundation -- and he does!!

Mr Grant is a great young man who has done a lot of work in the community.  He is a former ANC in the same SMD which he gre up in as a child.  As an adult him and his wife decided to make the area there home as well.

He is around my age (I think a year older) and is very, very active in the ward and for that part the city. Your son may know him. As it relates to Ward 5 Dems I'm fully supporting him and I think that he is the type of young,  fresh leadership that the organization needs.

One of the most influential African American ward's of DC we have to get in front of the 8 ball for our community/children/seniors and those individuals less forgotten. Mr. Andrew Rodger will surely take us their and beyond. So vote for him on June 24th starting at 6pm at Michigan Park Christian Church.

Also First Vice: Theo Brown,Second Vice: Franklin Garcia,Third Vice: Debbie Steiner, Treasurer: Allison D. Reese, Financial Secretary: Hazel Thomas, Corresponding Secretary: Jeralyn Cave, Asst. Recording Secretary: Shanna Cockrell. Way to go team for moving Ward 5 forward!

I wish Ronnie Edwards would move up to run for chair or Grace Lewis, but that could only happen with a write since the nominations were due in May.  I'd like to keep the top spot with some continuity and passion and with a proven leader.  But I guess I need to look at the remaining three candidates for chair since Brannum is not running now.  I don't know all the candidates well and expect to see campaign literature circulating.

[WardFive] Internal Review of My Constituent Service Fund

Dear Ward 5 Residents,

It is with deep regret that I report that following a routine, internal review of my Constituent Service Fund, I learned on Wednesday that a member of my staff made $225.07 in unauthorized expenditures from the Fund. This obviously is a very serious personnel matter, and I am disheartened that this incident occurred.

I hold myself and my office to the highest standard of personal integrity and have acted swiftly to address this matter. To this end, yesterday I took the necessary steps to terminate the employee and reported the violation to the Office of Campaign Finance (OCF). Now that this matter is under review, I have full confidence that OCF will conduct a thorough and prompt investigation.

Best,

Good Afternoon,

Commissioner Bradley, maybe we can take this opportunity to utilize these "typical" talking points and begin a more deep discussion.  I will start with the following:

A while back, a reporter asked Marvin Tucker if he thought it was still necessary to teach African American History in schools.  Of course Marvin gave him a YES and explained how important it was for African American children to learn their true history.  When he was done, I added that teaching African American History in schools would also be an excellent way to help with the evolution of mindset of European Americans as well.

So, it is not only important that African Americans especially the children are taught of the successful aspects of their ancestry (the hardships and their accomplishments) but it is imperative that European Americans and other ethnic groups are exposed to and taught this as well. Only then can others respect, appreciate and empathize the intrical aspects of our melting pot set of cultures. Remember, not too long ago, the Irish, Jews, Italians and others were clawing their way into society -- the only difference was that the color of their skin made their movement much easier.

So, It is extremely important to teach about the many leaders of African Americans and Africans throughout history and also the many other leaders of other cultures to help with evolution -- it will definitely help with equality.

Thanks for the research but it was clear to me from the start that the piece wasn't written by a high school principal.  Too many typical talking points.

Robert
