DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SCHEDULES WORKING SESSION TO DISCUSS THE DISTRICT'S STATE ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN

Washington, DC – The District of Columbia State Board of Education (State Board) will hold a working session to discuss potential revisions to the District's state accountability plan, including amendments to the District's ESEA Flexibility Waiver renewal. At this meeting, the State Board will focus on the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's (OSSE) engagement plan and deliberations on the measures of school quality that could inform the state accountability plan.

This meeting is part of the State Board's process to inform OSSE as it prepares its request for a four-year renewal of its ESEA Flexibility Waiver, through the 2018-2019 school year. The District's request for renewal is due by March 31, 2015.

The State Board may close a portion of the meeting to engage in professional development and other issues related to Board organization.

The working session will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 4:30pm at 441 4th Street NW, Room 1114.

While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate during the working session. However, individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the Board. Written testimony may also be submitted by email at sboe@dc.gov.

[WardFive] Unwrapped: DCPS PreK Programs and PreK Matter-of-Right Pilot

Trying to navigate DC's education landscape can be challenging -- especially when you are attempting to enter your child into the system for the first time.

Are you interested in having your child start school at age 3 or 4 but you don't completely understand the public early childhood (PreK3 or PreK4) education offerings?
Did you know: in school year 2015-16 DCPS is implementing a matter-of-right PreK3/PreK4 pilot program for families that live within the boundaries for Burroughs and Brookland @ Bunker Hill Education Campuses?

If the questions above sound familiar, interesting, or apply to you and your family, please join us (the Ward Five Council on Education in partnership with DCPS) for a special community conversation focused on helping you navigate and better understand early childhood education programs offered by DC Public Schools (DCPS) and to discuss the PreK matter-of-right pilot program.

When: Saturday, February 14, 2015
Time: 10-11:30am
Where: Burroughs Education Campus (1820 Monroe St. NE)
**Use Newton St. NE entrance on the backside of the school - the program will be in the cafeteria**
(RSVPs are not required but are encouraged)

Two representatives from DCPS will join us to discuss PreK3/PreK4 programs/curriculum offered in Ward 5 and to share the specifics of the PreK matter-of-right pilot program. Most importantly, you'll have the opportunity to ask the questions you've been waiting to ask!

We hope to see you there! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us at ward5coe@gmail.com.

(In March we will have a similar program focused on public charter PreK options)

[WardFive] 2015 Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program

The Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment program has started accepting applications TODAY (January 30th). If you know any young people ages 14-21 who might be looking for work this summer, this is a great opportunity. You can apply online starting TODAY at this link: http://does.dc.gov/service/summer-youth-employment-program
If you have any questions about the program:
Contact Email: Summerjobs@dc.gov or Contact Phone: (202) 698-3492
Program Overview
The Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a locally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment Services (DOES) that provides District youth ages 14 to 21 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through subsidized placements in the private and government sectors. Mayor Bowser signed the Mayor's Order 2015-037 on January 14, 2015 to rename the program the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program in honor of former Mayor and SYEP founder Marion Barry. Through SYEP, we strive to provide young people with the opportunity to:
- Earn money and gain meaningful work experience;
- Learn and develop the skills, attitudes, and commitment necessary to succeed in today's world of work;
- Gain exposure to various exciting career industries; and,
- Interact with dynamic working professionals in a positive work environment.
Though SYEP is a short-term employment and training program, our goal is to introduce our youth to employers who will positively impact their futures. Employers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area make this annual program possible by volunteering to serve as Host Employers and providing structured job opportunities for youth during the summer.
Program Dates
This year, SYEP will start on Monday, June 29, 2015 and will end on Friday, August 7, 2015.The six-week program will consist of 29 days of work (Friday, July 3, 2015 is observed as a holiday and youth will not be paid for this day).
Program Capacity
This year, SYEP will provide jobs for District youth between the ages of 14-21 years old, who apply prior to the deadline and complete necessary registration requirements.
