WATCH NIGHT SERVICE

Many of you who live or grew up in Black communities in the United States have probably heard of "Watch Night Services," the gathering of the faithful in church on New Year's Eve. The service usually begins anywhere from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and ends at midnight with the entrance of the New Year. Some folks come to church first, before going out to celebrate. For others, church is the only New Year's Eve event. Like many others, I always assumed that Watch Night was a fairly standard Christian religious service made a bit more Afro centric because that's what happens when elements of Christianity become linked with the Black Church.

Still, it seemed that predominately White Christian churches did not include Watch Night services on their calendars, but focused instead on Christmas Eve programs. In fact, there were instances where clergy in mainline denominations wondered aloud about the propriety of linking religious services with a secular holiday like New Year's Eve. However, there is a reason for the importance of New Year's Eve services in African American congregations.

The Watch Night Services in Black communities that we celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as "Freedom's Eve." On that night, Blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law. Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free. When the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God. Black folks have gathered in churches annually on New Year's Eve ever since, praising God for bringing us safely through another year. It's been 153 years since that first Freedom's Eve and many of us were never taught the African American history of Watch Night, but tradition still brings us together at this time every year to celebrate "how we got over."

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the appointment of Delano Hunter to serve as Chief Service Officer of Serve DC - The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism. Hunter, who previously served as the Interim Senior Deputy Director for Programs at the Department of Employment Services (DOES), will lead the Bowser Administration’s efforts to promote volunteerism and community service.

“Delano is a proven leader with a real talent for improving agency operations and implementing effective strategies,” said Mayor Bowser. “Most importantly, he is passionate about mobilizing District volunteers to serve our community, so that more residents can find their pathways to the middle class.”

Serve DC is instrumental in numerous District-led volunteer activities, including:

· The Resident Snow Team, a volunteer program that connects volunteers with elderly and disabled residents who need assistance shoveling walkways during the winter

· Hands on Hearts CPR Program, an initiative to train 5,000 people in hands-only CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) by September 2016

· The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service promoting service and civic engagement across the city

Hunter has worked in numerous roles in District government, including Deputy Director of Serve DC, Special Assistant at the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, and Interim Chief of Staff at DOES. Prior to joining District government, he worked for Nike Inc. in Beaverton, Oregon as a member of the highly selective Retail Development Program. While in Oregon, Hunter co-founded the Nike Product Creation Experience (NPCE), which provides mentorship to inner-city youth while teaching the product creation process.

Hunter went on to serve as an organizer in the Brentwood community of Ward 5. In this capacity, Hunter worked closely with residents on workforce development, truancy prevention, and community empowerment initiatives.

A native Washingtonian, Hunter was educated in District of Columbia public schools. He graduated summa cum laude from Delaware State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Currently, Hunter is completing his Masters of Business Administration at Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business, and serves as president of the Gateway Community Association. He lives in Ward 5 with his wife and son.

I will address with with Frank personally but I wanted to address it to this group as folks continue to circulate this letter. The reference to the middle east is very offensive and has no place in this letter. Further there is no need to insult anothet group of individuals when trying to prove a point, especially considering that thr majority of the folks who are passing the lettet along have never been to the so called middle east.

Please remember that language is a weapon and should be used correctly. Especially when said information will be widely distributed l.

I have spoken with the principal as well as many parents, concerned neighbors, and the community as a whole.

Dear Honorable Henderson:

The Team of 100 Fathers Inc. responded to a "May-Day" call of sorts from the concerned parents of Brookland Middle school, 1401 Michigan Avenue N.E We were quite surprised and shocked at the results of our visit so much that it forced us (100 Fathers Inc. and Parents of Brookland Middle school) to sadly address you personally. Since the start of this school year; parents, business owners, and Metro station workers have been up in arms at the behavior of the students at this school. In fact, we at 100 Fathers Inc. and the Parents alike are quite surprised that you haven't seen the rising smoke of chaos and mismanagement generating from this school pretty much since the very start. "We're not talking about the middle-east here, but the United States of America. During these agonizing months since the start of school, total havoc from the student body have taken control within the walls of this school at the expense of those students who want to learn, and school leadership who seem to not have a clue. At the very top of this list is the realization that the Principal assigned with the task of leading our precious children is ill-equipped and culturally removed from the plight of children and families of color especially. The charge that reaches out in our communities is "Ill fated leadership". Please allow me to note some very real and shocking details:

1. Evidence of hiding 'incidence reports" relating to fighting and suspensions
2. Evidence of neighborhood disruptions after school not being reported
3. Children being hurt as a result of fights not being reported
4. Evidence of teachers being involved in fights with students
5.Students literally taking control of the front office
6.No functioning PTA
7.Total disregard for the cries and concerns of parents and a lack of concern by the front office
8.Undocumented report of mass suspensions of at least 20 students in one incident
9,No immediate actions in place to proactively confront threats from neighboring communities
10. Undocumented calls to 911
11. Lewd behavior and conduct witnessed, yet not confronted in halls
12. Large numbers of students reporting to school late yet going unreported

Unfortunately, nothing here is lost in translation. The events are real, the characters are our children and an appointment/assigned leadership that has proven to be unfit to lead this school.........

We along with the body of parents have reached a point of no return. We demand your intervention and level of objective investigation.

Don't miss Spring Training!

Cheat Training is one of our most dynamic, exciting spring programs! Whether you are a seasoned veteran, new to Cheat Training, or one of our Youth paddlers, we have a program for you.

Registration will open at 9:30 am on Monday January 4, 2016. The programs will fill so be sure to check in that day. If you have a credit with CLAKS that you wish to use, I advise registering so you got a spot and then sending us an email to request a refund for the amount of credit.

We will have a wait list for each program. Please email to get on the wait list. It does move-- we usually get everyone in that stays on the wait list until March.
The registration link is on the button below and on the Cheat Training webpage. Check out our new registration and waiver system through Calleva. The link won't be live until the first Monday of the New Year!
