Hello Virginia and Mrs. KPW,
Just not paying attention. I continue to make the same mistake even though it has been identified before and I Read the Name almost Everyday when I pass the School. Must be my mind playing tricks on me or trying to say something along the lines of seeing more or "seying" more.
In the Caribbean phonics like this is use to clown things as now I view both educational meetings held at Luke C. More to be fraudulent and deceptive in nature as nothing that DCPS has done says community involvement, inclusiveness or being open. Imagine the arrogance in calling this a "community involvement meeting" but
1. They initiall stopped the line after about 12 people got in the first line up without knowing if it would take 10 minutes of discussion or 1 hour. Says something right from the start - Here is what it sounds like to me was discussed before getting to Ward 5 ---
"let's go in there, say what we have to say and take questions from about 10 - 15 people. Make it seem like we are listening".
2. Then, even though I repeatedly identified that I wanted to speak before they closed the line and each time they reminded the room, they didn't want me to because I didn't stand in the line from the beginning even though I got in with two people in line. That in itself says "CONTROL". In reality, they should be more organized and have #'s so that people wouldn't have to stand for 60 minutes just to talk and may miss involvment from fatigue of just standing. But, of course - not much different than not having text books or proper envrronments for our kids to learn and play in.
The reality is that they should be willing to hear from every parent and resident who wanted to speak since they come out once or twice a year and this is about our biggest investment - our children. Remember, a Captain of a Ship should stay on board until the last man leaves a sinking ship. If they really wanted involvement and not so focussed on their agenda, they would have a different approach. If it was me as Chancellor, I would stay and talk to everyone who had something to say to me - that's if I really cared about input.
Like I said, I think Kaya Cares, is Knowledgable, has Experience and she is really Capable, but she needs to separate herself from her surroundings, what she has been pushed towards, what is being dictated to her and believe more in herself and on our community involvement!! There is probably a more simple approach that they are missing.
Anyways, it is unlike me to continue making that mental mistake about Luke C. Moore without it being relative to a particular reason. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's not "quality schools" now: it's "increasing quality seats." Children have been reduced to inanimate objects, and the language is somehow intended, I guess, to deflect from discussing school closings at all -- it's just seat swapping, I guess.
Difference from Rhee's plan is magnitude this time: If allowed to go through, the IFF recommendation could collapse DCPS for good.

The reality is that tonight is probably going to be just like the last time at Luke Seymore. The presentation is controlled to make us give them the answer in a way so that they will be able to report that this is what the "community wanted". The Mayor's "community" summit at the Convention Center was the same. It did not address the issues that are most needed in the community - just what they were planning. So I am clear, I am not one who wants him gone as he is being blamed for what everyone else before him has probably done and probably most presently on the Council. I just wish that they would utilize the UNPAID FOR Knowledge of all the residents in the District to help guide him. Keep being PUPPETS and he and others will keep pulling the strings.
If it is what is so "GREAT/BEST for the City, then people wouldn't have this much dissention.

1. to raise fundamental questions about the validity of this IFF study which was funded by the Walton Family Foundation;
2. Where is the objectivity in a study that is paid for by the same foundation that supports and funds charter schools yet pushes for closure or charter take over of public schools?
3. Why are the Deputy Mayor and DCPS seeking the recommendations of IFF, a real-estate consulting company, to guide educational reform in DC?

For the record, I am not in favor of closing any schools at this time. I am in favor of smaller class size.
Is Maria Jones the one that was fighting to save Burroughs the last time schools were on the chopping block? I think that Burroughs was the only school that was spared out of the nine Ward 5 schools.
The meetings that Rhee had were set up to pretend the community had input. Backus Middle School was closed but the community got together to keep its educational purpose and supported making it the UDC Community College at Backus.
Shortly after the massive school closings the Anybody but Fenty chant began and the rest is history.
I can't make tonight's meeting but I would be so disappointed if the meetings are a charade or a rouse to close neighborhood schools to turn them into charter schools. The last round the last of the middle schools in Ward 5 was closed and LaSalle Elementary School k-8 in Ward 4 was borne. When Ward 5 schools were closed before we had a new Ward 5 councilmember who had not established his strength yet. Already under a new councilmember Ward 5 is being disrespected with the plan to put a streetcar barn at Spingarn High School.
It is time to stand up ensure good neighborhood schools and not turn them into charter schools after the District closes them.
