[WardFive] More Metro Trouble

I agree that this action is unacceptable.  It is time for us as a community to talk with parents, siblings, churches and organizations to support our citizens, schools, police and firefighters.

How awful and frightening!  Looks we are not safe anywhere.

With the escalating violence on Metro trains; I am shocked that the DC Council voted against higher penalties for crimes committed on innocent and random citizens on Metro!

We never know what to expect in this city.

This is sad and totally unacceptable.

We need to ask our city leaders to explain their rationale.

Let's be safe out there.  But the sad part is we never know when this type of senseless violence and crime will occur.

We're just trying to get to and from work, and other normal activities.  Not knowing we may be subjected to being attacked for just riding Metro.

Sad!

Awful experience. Glad you are ok.

I warned of this growing behavior back in the fall when a "pack" of youth surrounded my car in the parking lot of TJ Maxx.  I was lucky that they only banged on my car (there was damage) and nothing else happened. This is a serious growing problem in or area with youth traveling in groups and hurting people.

Its now escalated to the Metro where there are cameras so clearly the kids don't care about consequences. I have no idea what the solution is short of having more metro police specifically on the RED LINE which is where it seems to be happening. I do hope that when they face the judge they are tried as adults because they are committing adult crimes.

What a disappointment about McDuffie. Its not going to get better unless the consequences are severe to deter the behavior.

I really hope that no one else is hurt by this kind of violence. Be safe as you travel along on your day.

Wow! I'm sorry that happened to you Michael. That's very unnerving. I used to take the red line every day for work and never thought this level of aggression could happen esp on crowded well traveled trains but it seems every day there is at least one if not more incidents escalating in violence. The most fearful part of this seems to be that it is for pure sport.

As Rich pointed out yesterday - why aren't there stiffer penalties and why did McDuffie vote against that ? These kids are not afraid of getting caught or of the punishment if they are caught.

It's come down to metro needing to put armed marshals on each of the train cars to manage safety.  Or maybe hidden cameras in each car w human monitoring at the stations. Metro is on notice that there are random violent attacks - the gentleman who reported the gallery place incident said it took 10 min to find a metro person to report the incident to.

If metro or mpd doesn't crack down on this now we might all have to resort to start carrying our own weapons of choice to just feel safe and be able to help someone else in need.

This evening I had a terrible and frightening experience on the red line. I boarded a train at Brookland at about 4:45 PM. A group of approximately 20 high school students (male & female) boarded the same train at NOMA. The group boarded screaming obscenities. They immediately began harassing and terrorizing fellow passengers. They messed with me a bit (took the hat off my head, took videos of me, screamed in my face, etc) and later bothered another gentleman, and eventually a third person which resulted in physical violence. Almost all of the group was involved in the violence- swearing, screaming, kicking and punching, laughing, and again taking pictures and videos. I tried my best to pull some teens off of the man. I couldn't get off at Union Station because I was blocked in. I eventually got off at Judiciary Square and reported the incident to metro police.

I have lived and worked in Brookland for nearly 16 years. This is the first time I have experienced an incident of this magnitude.

[WardFive] News Release: Iowans Join Fight for DC Statehood

I hope everyone is doing well.

I, and other members of the DC Statehood Congressional Delegation, will be traveling to Iowa later today.  There is a good ground game advocating for DC Statehood in Iowa, http://www.iowansfordcstatehood.com.  This effort is being led by Senator Paul Strauss, and we will be there until the end of the Caucuses to ensure that full democracy for all Washingtonians is part of the agenda at some of the Iowa Caucuses taking place next Monday.   Please find attached Press Release about this trip.

For those unfamiliar with the issue:  The Capital of the US, Washington DC, has over 600,000 US citizens that pay federal taxes, serve on all branches of the military, and are full US citizens for all purposes, except for having voting representatives in the US Congress that can vote in either the House of Representative or the US Senate.  The citizens of Washington DC, for a long time, through various means, have been asking that their voices be heard by having their elected representatives be recognized and allowed to vote in both houses on their behalf.

Thank you.

[WardFive] RE: The President's Gun Safety Actions & People of Color

I fail to see the link between Obama's gun action and the shootings in the Black community. His action affects those who purchase guns legally. What street thug is going to submit to a background check when purchasing a gun on the street? Who will conduct that check--another thug?

We should recognize, however, that mass shootings are a very small percentage of U.S. firearm homicides, and that the President's actions also work to improve the quality of life in communities of color.

In 2014, African Americans accounted for 13 percent of the U.S. population, but over 57 percent of the victims of homicide by firearm<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001DJ8tUKC69QOemQgY03XP9nQspO7pzBRtvuOe3Vykb1hZnjQeFO8CNvMgYqDaVf4WlLu3aSdLQ_jiFLCY_r9f5eWyFQ0xM4XjYwiLCxsZUXZjzVpbGtucRi1vtWyhzLXXmhQ7MA_7mPhW_ym5O8moJ_4XCqtl7AmZiHEfGAcmbIxkkqdit9X25zVuEyMAU2GT&c=Zcytg5QUHre1H9dadpdbAQDCVNNdkbJR6EmqStc72htGfdqfbDm9hw==&ch=XJPLUniZeTixgRvHQxPMDrX1CcY2ftryfyPmzfsP1NXWxTori-Ts6g==>. Firearm homicide was the leading cause of death for African American males ages 15-34, and the third leading cause of death for Latino males in the same age group (and would be second if combined with suicides in which firearms were used). Firearms were used in over 91 percent of homicides of African-American males ages 15-34, and in 81 percent of homicides of Latino males in this age group.

In 2015, the Joint Center partnered with the Urban Institute and the Joyce Foundation to organize meetings in three cities: Richmond, VA, Milwaukee, WI, and Stockton, CA. We wanted to hear from religious leaders, formerly incarcerated persons, law enforcement, local elected officials, and other community leaders about the impact of gun violence, mass incarceration, and policing. Easy access to guns was repeatedly cited as a key factor that contributed to gun violence.

Accessibility to guns is also one of many factors in frayed relationships between communities of color and police. Gunfire has been the leading cause of death for officers killed in the line of duty every year from 1995 to 2015.

Granted, many other factors are relevant outside of accessibility to guns. Implicit bias, for example, is a key issue in improper policing. Inadequate economic opportunity and ineffective conflict resolution techniques are related to high firearm homicide rates.

Accessibility to guns, however, is also a key factor. Research shows that states that require all gun buyers to pass background checks, issue licenses to gun owners, and regulate gun sellers put fewer guns in the hands of people committing crimes. A recent study<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001DJ8tUKC69QOemQgY03XP9nQspO7pzBRtvuOe3Vykb1hZnjQeFO8CNvMgYqDaVf4WW1qOxve17RY7eu-XAsImDIy_tPSrpor8d12xkDoEMaGM0fgYJ0VqxxCzcdaUZYfPt9mO9-fitnKago2I5ewwk77ZgOtJex8nJN94GaNqB-twLCxVctOxJP9l0mUWf9EqqX5lZ2dDqHG_7HUvzEQ79FGuVrTju3yzOlZwhwFBsGT5VQ9Sb_sOmImt2OAEmyvUL391qXRpa-nw3MhJO0628tqduTi9knmwU0GLm48Wti0=&c=Zcytg5QUHre1H9dadpdbAQDCVNNdkbJR6EmqStc72htGfdqfbDm9hw==&ch=XJPLUniZeTixgRvHQxPMDrX1CcY2ftryfyPmzfsP1NXWxTori-Ts6g==> by Johns Hopkins University found that Connecticut's handgun permit law reduced firearm homicides by 40 percent. When Missouri repealed a similar law, gun homicides increased by 25 percent.

Gun homicides in communities of color are committed largely with guns that are illegally trafficked, through private transfers without background checks, theft, or via straw purchasers. By addressing these issues, the President's actions should help law enforcement stem the flow of guns that are doing so much damage to our communities.

President Obama's executive actions<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001DJ8tUKC69QOemQgY03XP9nQspO7pzBRtvuOe3Vykb1hZnjQeFO8CNvMgYqDaVf4W-tJLjPU7F2t6kgNLrU8iU6LwI45NKkFFJidDHStebciTk4cbzBJrVAD_tB5dbeaT1Q8saWNOjG864Cj2Bwt0hbyLIqdwelL9V0LvbMb-WAhoP8Mc7A3OEeyQekPSYoP0kT20iAksnGHtutmdEJBUSSav7LzQNX2UIZsp8fxeZ18-xUtGWkPdjfjh_EMS8EB-gCSGaQ4HUYRqAfR9BYEmQ3yEBNi9jh63&c=Zcytg5QUHre1H9dadpdbAQDCVNNdkbJR6EmqStc72htGfdqfbDm9hw==&ch=XJPLUniZeTixgRvHQxPMDrX1CcY2ftryfyPmzfsP1NXWxTori-Ts6g==> work to keep guns out of the wrong hands by tightening the private sale loophole which allows many gun transactions to occur without federal background checks on purchasers, requiring dealers to report guns that are lost or stolen in transit, and increasing the capacity and efficiency of background checks. While there is much more to do to address gun violence, President Obama's actions are essential.

Good evening Councilmember McDuffie,

That area is part of PSA 503.  Comparing theft from autos for the current 30 days to last year at this time, they are down 33 %, from 33 to 22.  However, in the last 7 days 9 theft from autos occurred.  Due to this quick uptick in one week, units will be given special attention, in particular to those block cited below on all tours.  In addition, I have four extra officers in the Brookland/Woodridge area for burglaries.  I will make sure they are updated on this trend and focus on this also.  The PSA lieutenant will ensure that pamphlets with safety tips on preventing theft from autos for the next few days.

Commander,

Please see the below email from North Woodridge Citizens Association president, Shirley Rivens Smith, and advise as to whether their neighborhood is seeing an uptick in thefts from autos and what if any steps you all are taking to address this matter.

Thanks very much.

Below is information of two incidents in the community.

(1)    The car of one of our returning neighbors, who wants to remain anonymous at her request, was broken into upon her return from a two-week work trip this morning around 1:00 am.

This was the second time her vehicle was broken into since her return to the District.

The following things were taken: An IPAD, the screen was already cracked but contains photos of her children,

Her military ID's, her government/military issued Dell computer containing work gathered on her roadtrips,

a digital backpack just for starters, OH, she found her CD's in someone's trash, had it checked for prints, the prints were smudged unfortunately.

...you MAY have seen her this morning looking in trashcans in the alleys and walking up and down the area this morning as well.

DC's finest, sorry for the sarcasm, MPD has been in the neighborhood looking.

AND...while I was speaking with her this afternoon, her neighbors car window was smashed with a rock and HER purse was taken.

If you come across any of these items, just hit this listserve, I'll pass on the information to her...in the meantime, keep your car doors locked and pass on any suspicious behavior, etc., etc.

2200 Quincy Street

(2)    Two young girls broke into a car in the 2800 block of Otis Street and drove it down to the 1500 or 1600 block. Neighbors saw them and called the police. They stole things from the car that were later found in the alley. Someone threw a bowling ball the next night thru the back door of another house in the same block.

Please be careful, do not leave anything in your car and lock your doors.
