Good evening Councilmember McDuffie,

That area is part of PSA 503.  Comparing theft from autos for the current 30 days to last year at this time, they are down 33 %, from 33 to 22.  However, in the last 7 days 9 theft from autos occurred.  Due to this quick uptick in one week, units will be given special attention, in particular to those block cited below on all tours.  In addition, I have four extra officers in the Brookland/Woodridge area for burglaries.  I will make sure they are updated on this trend and focus on this also.  The PSA lieutenant will ensure that pamphlets with safety tips on preventing theft from autos for the next few days.

Commander,

Please see the below email from North Woodridge Citizens Association president, Shirley Rivens Smith, and advise as to whether their neighborhood is seeing an uptick in thefts from autos and what if any steps you all are taking to address this matter.

Thanks very much.

Below is information of two incidents in the community.

(1)    The car of one of our returning neighbors, who wants to remain anonymous at her request, was broken into upon her return from a two-week work trip this morning around 1:00 am.

This was the second time her vehicle was broken into since her return to the District.

The following things were taken: An IPAD, the screen was already cracked but contains photos of her children,

Her military ID's, her government/military issued Dell computer containing work gathered on her roadtrips,

a digital backpack just for starters, OH, she found her CD's in someone's trash, had it checked for prints, the prints were smudged unfortunately.

...you MAY have seen her this morning looking in trashcans in the alleys and walking up and down the area this morning as well.

DC's finest, sorry for the sarcasm, MPD has been in the neighborhood looking.

AND...while I was speaking with her this afternoon, her neighbors car window was smashed with a rock and HER purse was taken.

If you come across any of these items, just hit this listserve, I'll pass on the information to her...in the meantime, keep your car doors locked and pass on any suspicious behavior, etc., etc.

2200 Quincy Street

(2)    Two young girls broke into a car in the 2800 block of Otis Street and drove it down to the 1500 or 1600 block. Neighbors saw them and called the police. They stole things from the car that were later found in the alley. Someone threw a bowling ball the next night thru the back door of another house in the same block.

Please be careful, do not leave anything in your car and lock your doors.
