We encourage you to participate in a Districtwide survey that will help us better understand residents' opinions about safety and policing in their neighborhoods. Please click on this link to take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DC-Safety-Survey. Greetings Upper Yough Training group!

Next week, on Monday or Wednesday depending on which day you signed up for, will be your first day of Upper Yough Training! Here is an overview of the program.

Slalom: Mondays and Wednesdays are slalom workouts, designed to practice strokes, speed, and a bunch of rolling- all things you will need for the Upper Yough.  We meet at 6 pm at the Feeder Canal.  Remember that the Clara Barton Pkwy is only open to traffic leaving the city at that time.  If you are coming from the other direction you may want to park in Brookmont and walk over.  Please let me know if you have questions about directions.  Pablo and Tom will be teaching on alternate weeks.  You should bring a long, maneuverable boat if you have one.  Slalom boats are great, too.  If you can't make a session and need to attend the other weeknight, no problem.  Please try to let us know ahead of time.

Saturdays: for these workouts, bring your creek boat.  Currently, we are unable to secure water at Dickerson so will plan to have training on the Potomac, 9-11 am, with a couple trips added in. That will change if Dickerson is running.  For the first Saturday, 5/9, plan to meet Tom for several Little Falls laps at Lock 6 at 9 am.  On May 30th we will be heading to the Savage and June 20th we are going to the Lower Yough unless you are on the trip to the Upper.

Upper Yough Trip dates: We have made some changes and additions to the Upper Yough trip dates.  They are now 6/20, 6/27, 7/18, 7/25 (The Great Falls Race is now 7/11).  Tom and Pablo will talk to you individually about whether you are ready to attend the trip the week before.  Some of you have told me which dates work best for you- let me know if anything changes.  The trips are limited to 8 people at a time.  We will still have Upper Yough Training on Saturday for those not going.

See you guys next week!

[WardFive] Is your group interested in learning more about grants for small businesses? Invite Great Streets to a meeting

Is your group interested in learning more about grants for small businesses?  If so, then you may be interested in the Great Streets grants.  GNYAGG has had Great Streets at meetings and was impressed with the presentations.

For your information, Great Streets has begun to publicize the FY16 Great Streets small business funding opportunity. Grants of up to $50,000 each will be awarded on a competitive basis to owners of small retail and service-oriented businesses in 13 Great Streets corridors to support these entrepreneurs in completing improvement projects for their commercial properties.

Last Friday, Great Streets released a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the grant and anticipates releasing the Request for Applications (RFA) in August, at which point business owners can begin to apply for the grant. This grant round will close in September.

With the above in mind, are you interested in representatives of the Great Streets program doing a presentation at an upcoming community meeting or forum to highlight the funding opportunity to small business owners?  Or would you like to co-host a standalone meeting to discuss the grant with potential applicants.

The Greater New York Avenue Gateway Group (GNYAGG) decided to help spread the word; therefore is circulating information compiled from another source.  GNYAGG is available to co-host or partner/work with other groups to help reach out to small businesses as part of this tremendous and needed outreach.  Maybe there can be a collaborative effort to host a larger meeting with several groups partnering in this short time frame.  In any case, please invite Great Streets to one of your meetings to help build strong business communities that you desire.

Should you have specific questions and/or want representatives to come out to meet with you and your group, please contact this outstanding, committed government leader below:

[WardFive] DPW's HHW, E-cycling, Shredding Options For The Month Ahead

DPW Offers Options to Dispose of HHW, E-cycling, Personal Documents for Shredding in August 2015

Check www.dpw.dc.gov for 2015 drop-off, document shredding schedules.

The DC Department of Public Works announced today the August 2015 schedule for disposing of household hazard waste, e-cycling and personal documents for shredding at the Fort Totten Transfer Station*.

Weekly, Saturday HHW and e-cycling drop-off scheduleAugust 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 between 8 am and 3 pm.

Monthly, weekday HHW and e-cycling drop-off: Thursday, July 30.  Every month, weather permitting, DPW will accept HHW and e-cycling the Thursday before the first Saturday between 1 pm and 5 pm.

Monthly, Saturday personal document shredding is August 1 between 8 am and 3 pm.  DPW will accept personal documents for shredding the first Saturday of the month only.

District residents may bring HHW items such as cooking oil, pesticides, pet flea control and cleaning fluids to Fort Totten, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment.  For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on this link www.dpw.dc.gov, and navigate to Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off. DPW does not accept latex paint, which can be disposed of in the trash. Paint must be dried out by adding an absorbent, such as kitty litter or sawdust, to it before it goes in the trash.

On the first Saturday of the month only, residents may bring up to five boxes of personal documents to be shredded.  No business or commercial material will be accepted.  Personal documents to be shredded will be accepted only on the first Saturday (except holidays) because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives on the first Saturday of the month.

DPW reminds residents that certain batteries (lithium-based and batteries greater than 9 volts) should be taped before being brought to Fort Totten.  Lithium-based batteries are most commonly found in cell phones, digital cameras and laptops.  Also, hearing aids, watches and keyless remotes typically use button cells that contain lithium.  To safely dispose of batteries with lithium or batteries of greater than 9 volts, put clear, masking or electrical tape on the batteries’ terminals.  Flat button batteries can be sandwiched between two layers of tape.  Examples are pictured at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414902. Place these batteries in a separate container from other batteries that don’t require being taped, e.g., A, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries.

*Directions to Fort Totten, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.  Directions from additional locations can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.
