Malicious cyber attacks increase 81 percent in 2011, report finds

In the wake of "Cyber Week" in the House of Representatives, security vendor Symantec Corp. released its annual Internet Security Threat Report that paints a pretty frightening reality: an 81 percent increase in malicious attacks that are no longer limited to large organizations.
The report, released Monday, found that the number of malicious attacks continued to climb even as the number of vulnerabilities decreased. Symantec blocked more than 5.5 billion malicious attacks in 2011, an increase of 81 percent over the previous year. The number of unique malware types increased to 403 million, and the number of Web attacks blocked per day jumped 36 percent.
On a brighter note, spam levels fell, and new vulnerabilities discovered decreased by 20 percent. The report points to social media as a primary mechanism for launching attacks.
More troubling for the business community was a rise in targeted attacks, which as the name implies go after a specific individual or organization. The number of daily targeted attacks increased from 77 per day to 82 per day by the end of 2011. While traditionally focused on public sector and government, 2011 brought far more attacks on private businesses – including the smaller ones.
More than 50 percent of such attacks target organizations with fewer than 2,500 employees, according to the report, and almost 18 percent target companies with fewer than 250 employees. More than half — 58 percent — of attacks target non-execs, including employees in human resources, public relations and sales. They often serve as a direct link into the company, are easy for attackers to identify online and are used to getting proactive inquiries and attachments from unknown sources.
The report recommended not only standard antivirus software but "reputation-based protection" that can handle previously unknown threats. The report also highlighted data loss prevention solutions and network-based protection such as firewalls.
Beyond products, organizations should implement good security policies, ensuring that computer applications remain patched and confidential data is encrypted, particularly on mobile devices.
The report was released just as a privacy debate among members of Congress begins to heat up after a bill passed in the House to allow the government to receive cyber threat information from businesses. The House will also vote on bills this week to amend the Federal Information Security Management Act that dictates how agencies protect their networks and systems; to reauthorize computer research and development, and to better coordinate federal research into cybersecurity.

Re: cheat_training_group Go TEAM!

The short boat class is smaller, but hotly contested. Remix should be
faster than a lot of the creek boats commonly entered. Go for it!

Re: cheat_training_group Go TEAM!

Ryan, I am leaving around 10 am on Friday and headed up for the race
and activities. I will paddle Friday and Saturday. I am going to
camp in the upper campground (a little quieter) with some friends from
nc. I am leaving Sunday.

I am going to paddle on Friday as fast as the remix will allow with is
about back of the pack.

The level might be around 2.5 to 3 on Friday so should be a good
time.

[WardFive] A note much past DUE!

Good Morning,

There is an article below that was a response in regards to Pit-Bulls.  Here is a quote that I would like you to think about - "If you abuse a dog its whole life, it will eventually lash out.  Pit Bulls are abused regularly.  After a life of being beaten, starved, and forced to fight, a dog will get loose and hurt a child.  Communities then turn and say, "we need to ban these dogs."  No, you need to fight people who abuse them.  There are bloodlines of pit bulls bred for the last 200 years to be family dogs"

Please follow my line of thought - Take the word "Dog"(any reference to animal) out and start substituting a race of people who you think this relates to.  I have done so and below, I share with you as it relates to many African Americans here in Washington DC (not wanting to focus on the full 400+ years):

If you abuse a African American Community their whole life, they will eventually lash out.  African Americans are abused (mentally, physically, emotionally) regularly and deprived of equal opportunity compared to their European American counterparts.  After a life of being beaten, starved, and forced to fight, live in a drug infested area, with parents who have suffered the same treatment a generation or more prior, an African American Youth will grow and more than likely continue to perpetuate the same unto their children as well as inflict pain onto others.  Communities then turn and say, "we need to lock these youth up."  No, you need to fight people who abuse them. (I must include many of our Political Leaders (Black and White) here as well).

It is time to start/continue even more today, being more responsible for the debt that is owed which has allowed the many of us the opportunity to be who we are and become our brothers keepers more than we already are. It is also time for those Whites (only you know who you are) who do not recognize that they have hugely benefited on the b(l)acks of others, allowing you to capitalize on the advantages of a generational head start, often times on simply just being White which has allowed you to be the "perfect" acting, know so much, being able to afford private school, to drive your kid to school, a "green" life or even not eat chips and soda for breakfast or "dine in" at home from a Chinese Carryout on the corner of MLK and Good Hope Road of the past, and all the other things one takes for granted.

There are bloodlines of African Americans whose generations link back to great Civilizations and even simple villages. Trust and believe it is the linkage to that strength of family that this culture have survived that exhibits such a welcome feel and open arms into their community. So, understand that there is no need to be a "Trojan Horse" but instead, there is room for everyone to benefit from the strengths of each other - now or later - knowing that investment laced with love and compassion breathes reciprocal behavior and exponential generational returns (ROIs)!  Learn to do/invest, just to do/invest just for doing/investment sake more than just planting trees, and fixing personal property, building blogs, newspapers, joining BNCA just to vote for a development which abuses the SAP that you never read and providing all the other needs/wants to the "under-served" community while the under-privileged community continues to suffer and amenity packages are mere skeletons of what they should be.

Note: A quote from the Caribbean Mr. Ramson - "there is no THANK YOU necessary for doing what one is supposed to do" and the capitalization of such for personal gain dilutes the act in of itself" .  Now to the Whites who have understood the plight and have had an empathetic approach in moving our movement/people forward, your actions while very much appreciated, is an expectation as a repayment of debt owed. To the ones who are not fully involved and are motivated to understand the debt that you owe, I suggest you start being more compassionate to the needs and plight of our community.  Understand that because you have the money to buy in, doesn't automatically make you a member of the community and gets you the respect.  You have to earn it, just like in a Fraternity or Sorority. Just don't have the mail addressed "N.E., Washington, DC", be present and understand the need to participate in the repair of our community.  When meditating, focus on that.  Understand my reason for being "INVECTIVE" in dealing with some of you and your treatment is that I am fully appreciative of all that has been done by those who have cut away the forest, moved the boulders, dug tunnels, were hung, died or suffered in any way which has allowed me the opportunity to have the life that I have today.  Many of you really need to be more "invective" with each other if that is what needs to be done to make our Ward better.  I only wish I had took my head out of my __________  sooner. But as the saying goes, often times, one only gets infuriated and activated when something has affected them or someone very close to home.

So much so, I have come to understand that a certain understanding needs to be had - "It is not the Roses that you pick from amongst the Thorns and place on your table that makes life so beautiful, as those are only a ornamental and have a self serving affect.  It is the rose bushes that you continue to cultivate, feed, prune that come back every year after year and let the world see, allowing for pollination that affects humanity.  How sweet the smell of the Rose that the entire world can, hear, see and smell!! - Rabindranauth Ramson 4/30/12

Let me translate - stop talking about and thinking about the fact that you have "Black" friends and live in a "Diverse" community.  Start understanding that it is our duty now that we are here to roll our sleeves up and start developing the kids and adults in our thorny neighborhoods.  ***How sweet the smell of the Rose that the entire world can, hear (as pollination occurs), see (the re-imaging that occurs) and smell (the actual taste of watching the community grow)!!  I can only share vicariously the sweet sounds of "Mr. Rob" the many times I hear it from young adults today in this community who I have watch grow up.

Greg, it is not that I don't like or appreciate some of you, Tom, it is not that I don't like you and appreciate some of you, and so goes for the rest - including the Padous for who I am actually thankful for opening "Pandora's Box" 3 years ago. Little did they know (even I didn't fully realize) what was hidden under my skull and blinded by my focus - Bo, I hope you are listening.  Today, while so much of the concentration is on the youth behavior and change (the symptoms), I choose to extend the information/education to adults (very often the cause/source).  I really just want to continue the work of  Mr. Edison and let the light shine brighter to illuminate the dark corners of our lives and push the envelope for positive change in all of us.

For all those who know a thing or two or three or four about a thing or two or three or four or more, bring it to the table and lets figure it out.  The Note has come DUE!!  Let's find a way to pay it in full and guide the next generation into true equality.

Rob Ramson

"Pit Bulls are no more vicious than Golden Retrievers, Beagles or other popular dogs! In a recent study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS), Pit Bulls achieved a passing rate of 83.9%. That's as good or better than Beagles ... 78.2%, and Golden Retrievers ... 83.2%. How did your favorite breed do? See for yourself - go to: www.ATTS.org"

"Pit Bulls can't lock their jaws. Their jaws are constructed just like any other dog. In fact if you take the x-ray of a Chihuahua and compare it to that of a Pit Bull, you will see that they are both the same except for the size difference."

I have a mix we adopted as a puppy - and as he grows, he looks more like a pit bull every day.  Sweetest dog you'll ever meet.  There are two reasons you see pit bulls demonised the media:

The first is ignorance.  "Pit Bull" is a term that includes at least three specific breeds, but is often used in an even broader context to describe any number of dogs.  I've seen news reports where a "Pit Bull' attacked, and the dog was clearly a different breed.  (I have another dog that is a black lab and neighbors often ask about my "two pit bulls.")  So when people say, "a pit bull" attacked," did they mean a Staffordshire Terrier?  An American Pit Bull?  Bull dog?  Some mix?

The second reason in that these dogs are victimised more than any other breed.  If you abuse a dog its whole life, it will eventually lash out.  Pit Bulls are abused regularly.  After a life of being beaten, starved, and forced to fight, a dog will get loose and hurt a child.  Communities then turn and say, "we need to ban these dogs."  No, you need to fight people who abuse them.  There are bloodlines of pit bulls bred for the last 200 years to be family dogs.

Veterinarians and animal welfare groups do not support laws banning particular breeds - these laws don't appeal to people who know the dogs, they appeal to people who don't understand dogs.

Ohio just repealed a state law ending breed discriminating.  This article is worth a quick read:

A little education goes a long way...

Haha!  We had an awesome group this week.  I was surprised that I did know some of the names of the rapids and even a line or two.  #17 still throws me off though.  Didn't hurt that we had a great level and two amazing instructors.  As long as the leader is allowed to be the slowest in the group, I'm up for it.  Submit your applications to Ryan for LAKS speed!  Only requirements are that you have to agree to stick together and work together at least until the end of Pete Morgan and finish without DNF next to your name.

"enthusiastically competitive" or "finishing is winning!"

Those determined to beat Tom downriver become the "Mac's LAKS" team.
Other competitive teams become "LAKS ATTACKS 1, 2, 3"  or other
streamlined nom de plume.

Then there are the "ReLAKSers", "LAKSadaisicals" and  "LAKS Back-O-the-
Pack" who are measuring the experience by the fun-o-meter versus the
chronometer. In fact, I'm already hearing rumors of a new LAKS Speed
team. :-)

Our goals?

- First --- and most important --- is for all to be safe and
successful in completing the race.
- Second is to make Liquid Adventures Kayak School (LAKS) the largest
group on the river.
- Third is to push the "Mac's LAKS" team higher in the team rankings
--- they were third last year. Calling all speed demons! :-)

The team thing is not real formal. Just ask them to add your team name
on race day when you check in. (You DID send in your
registration...right?) Looking forward to having some fun --- and
showing all those other racers the power of LAKS!

OK, I just can't quit without a few more possible team names (Tom
HATES this part ;-):

"ExLAKS" - they've got smooth moves

"LAKS Fear" - fear is no factor for these racers...and "LAKS
Confidence" just didn't convey the right message ;-)

And in tribute to last weekend's take-out rave....LAKS Ecstasy (this
trip ain't over yet!)

Enjoy!
JOHN

P.S. And how about a Grrl Power LAKS team again this year?

Re: cheat_training_group Go TEAM!

Currently taking applications for LAKS Speed (can be viewed as confident or self-deprecating depending on your viewpoint).

If you plan on paddling in the pools, surviving the rapids, and you want a few folks to look out for you, this is your group. Creek boats are welcome.

Teams for the Cheat Race?

Yes! Not only is there a team competition, but it is a great way to
buddy up, sharing your knowledge of the lines and feeling a little
safer out there.

Re : cheat_training_group (no subject)

If some of you feel the urge of experiencing some "cultural immersion" into this scene, I propose you share a ride with my Wavehopping guys sometimes... That tribe loves the womp of EDM and I wonder why the speakers of Tom's "Little Gray Van" have not exploded yet... Now that I think of it, it must be because they get a "rap break" once in a while. Hmm... yeah... that's got to be it... a rap "break"...

Breaking the Code: A Guide to Festival and Dubstep Lingo

Fripsters, Hoopers, Womp and Wookies

ACL 2010 ACL 2010
Two nights ago on America's Got Talent, Iluminate performed to a Calvin Harris song, then I realized not only was it his new single, Feel So Close, it was the Nero remix. That song JUST came out. What is going on? I'll tell you what.
EDM is mainstream and Dubstep is the new Nickleback.
If you are one of the many new to the scene, you may be wondering, first off, what is EDM? What the heck all these people running around in furry boots and tutus doing at Kaskade? What does Womp mean and why does that girl have it written on her chest? What's up with these "tribes" of people in furry animal hats? Well, here you go. A guide to EDM, festival-speak, dubstep-dancing and everything that goes along with it.
EDM: Short for electronic dance music.  If you don't know what that is I would suggest using wikipedia, and then, reevaluating your life.
Dubstep: Know to insiders as "bass music" the dubstep music scene is currently the biggest thing since sliced bread.  Typically slower and harder-hitting than usual electronic dance music, wookies love to womp to this type of sound. Think Rusko and Caspa and with the new cross-genre, loosely defined dubsteb encompassing the popular Bassnectar, Nero and Skrillex.
Womp: Used to describe the bass sounds in dubstep music.  Often used multiple times, such as "womp womp" or "this rusko beat womps so hard".
Dubstreamer: This one made me laugh, and while new to the scene, so true.  A term coined by hippsterrunoff.com, it describes "an emerging genre of suburban bros who are vibing to the recent 'trendy' electronic music called 'dubstep' that is going mainstream."
Electro Shuffle: Originating as the "Melborne Shuffle" in the late 1980′s underground rave and club scene, the fast heel-and-toe dance experienced a recent revival thanks to LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem, and the lyrics "everyday I'm shuffling".  This style of dancing is suitable for various types of electronic music, my favorite example of this is set to Mord Fustang's Milky Way, below.
Frippie/ Frippster: A cross between frat and hippie, or frat and hipster this term was coined by fellow Sherpas to describe the increasingly cross-genre subculture that is currently roaming the streets and festivals of Austin, Texas. Placing value on both their 9-5 and their social life, frippsters often don a button down during the week and a bandana and chacos on the weekend.  They can be seen roaming the aisles of Whole Foods, chilling out at Blues on the Green or enjoying a brew at Barton Springs Saloon.  They feel a strong pull toward music and festivals and everything neon.
Wookie: A festival goer whose existence consists of following around jam bands and pan-handling at festivals.  A wookie probably hasn't showered since Burning Man…last year.  Wookies love to womp, can be seen in dirty backpacker/homeless attire possibly barefoot and getting down to dubstep.  (Not to be confused with a hippie who is someone who lives a certain lifestyle due to their beliefs. Hippies often shower and have jobs.)
Trance:  A sub-genre of tecno/electronica.  This type of music usually involves a relaxing/upbeat tune and often features female vocals. The furry boot wearing girls in tutus and fishnets (also known as Rave Girls) tend to surface anytime trance music is involved.
Spirithoods: Seen on both guys and girls, the idea is to find your spirit animal from a plethora of furry hoodies with paws (which happen to be great for dancing). You can find any animal you can think of, ranging from wolves to pandas, cheetahs to snow leopards.  If you are in the market to buy a spirit hood, I would recommend spirithoods.com.  They are by far the most well crafted I have seen on the festival circuit, and if you choose a ProBlue hoodie, 10% of the proceeds go the the endangered animal fund that corresponds to your animal.
Tribe: A term that is being casually thrown around to mean your clan, group, pack, and other like-minded festival goers.  Those that wear spirithoods usually refer to other hoodie wearers as being part of their "tribe".
Hoopers: What was once a childhood pastime is now a festival activity for all ages. Predominately female, and preferably good looking, hoopers tend to lean toward hippie and usually wear some kind of belly-baring attire while they sensually (I know, you have to see it to believe it) dance with one, or multiple hoola hoops.
This weekend's ACL presents the perfect opportunity to try out your newly-expanded vocabulary. So go forth and dance the dance. Feel the base in your chest and throw your hands in the air when the music drops. Slap on your glowsticks and head out into the night with your sunglasses on because you my friend are now a festival-going, EDM-listening, dubstepping-pro.
These definitions are straight from our Sherpas and have been augmented by Urban Dictionary.  Have any other unique festival slang you want to share? Or a better definition than what we provided?  We would love to hear from you! Please, drop us a comment, below or email us a frontsherpa@gmail.com.
