[WardFive] DPW to Observe Labor Day, Monday, September 4th

DPW to Observe Labor Day, Monday, September 4th

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will observe Labor Day, Monday, September 4; therefore, sanitation services and most parking enforcement will be suspended and will resume on Tuesday, September 5.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, September 5.

• Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.

• In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Thursday’s collections will slide to Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday’s and Friday’s collections will slide to Wednesday and Saturday.

• Street sweeping will be suspended Monday and resume Tuesday, September 5.

The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed Monday, September 4 and reopen Tuesday, September 5 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

While most parking enforcement will be suspended, DPW will enforce parking restrictions Monday, September 4, in the Nationals Park neighborhood.

Streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Labor Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays, streetcar parking enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays—Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am. Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes September 5.

DPW Offers Options to Dispose of HHW/E-cycling/Personal Documents for Shredding in September

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will accept District residents’ household hazardous waste and e-cyclables on Thursday, August 31 from 1pm – 5pm, in addition to our regular Saturday service from 8am – 3pm at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE.* DPW will also provide document shredding services on Saturday, September 2 from 8am – 3pm for up to five boxes (or equivalent container) of documents, such as bank statements, credit cards, and pay stubs for shredding from each resident. The boxes should be no larger than 16.5”x12.5”x 8.5” or the approximate size of a box of copy paper. Document shredding is available the first Saturday of the month for paper documents of a sensitive nature. Please place newspapers, magazines and other items that are not confidential in your recycling bins.

District residents may bring HHW items such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment. For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, including how to prepare lithium batteries or batteries greater than 9 volts, and additional information about document shredding, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

In observance of Labor Day, DCRA will be closed on Monday, September 4, 2017. We use this list serve for information about meeting places for Fall Training and trips. If you are part of this email chain from Cheat or Upper Yough training and do not wish to receive these emails, you can remove yourself at the bottom of this and every email from Google Groups. You are also welcome to stay!

Fall Trainers:

Thanks for signing up for this year's Fall Program! We are excited to have you. Due to changing river level, skill levels, instructor's whim, etc, we do change location week to week. Please check this email each week to find out location for both your week day and your Saturday practices.

For this week, please meet at Sandy Beach (not in the parking lot) at 5:30. The session will be 5:30 - 7:30. If you arrive late, plan to paddle up- you should see the group at Portage or potentially O-deck. Bobby Miller will be teaching Tuesday and Wednesday this week and you will have Steve-O on Thursday. If you need to change nights for whatever reason, please try to let us know in advance. It helps the instructor to know who will be there. Playboats are recommended for all of the in-town practices.

Grant Alert: Grown in DC for Farmers Market & Cottage Foods Closes Friday August 25th

Funding Amount & Details
DSLBD is announcing grant dollars up to $75,000 for Fiscal Year 2017 to DC non-profits supporting farmers' markets and cottage food vendors in areas eligible under the Food, Environmental, and Economic Development in the District of Columbia Act of 2010. Activities between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017. Successful applicants may be eligible for renewal of up to $125,000 after October 1, 2017. Eligible project areas are in HUB Zones and/or Census Tracts 18.01, 33.01, 95.05, 95.07, or 95.08.

Deadlines
Submission deadline is Friday, August 25 at 2:00 p.m. All submissions are to be made in hard copy and hand delivered to the DSLBD front desk at 441 4th Street, NW, Suite 850N, Washington, DC 20001.

The multi-faceted star became known as the funnier half of the slapstick comedy duo Martin and Lewis, which he formed with singer Dean Martin.

But the popular entertainer also enjoyed a long film and stage career after he split with Martin in 1956, writing, directing and acting in many hit movies through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including "The Nutty Professor,' "The Bellboy" and "The Ladies Man.'

And Lewis was a well-known advocate for muscular dystrophy research — hosting his famous MDA telethon from 1966 until 2010 — as well as raising money for other children's issues.
