[WardFive] Save the DC Area Writing Project

Dear Ward 5 residents,

On August 3, 2012, the Board of Directors for the DC Area Writing Project will host a fundraiser/fish fry in my backyard . The event will feature nationally acclaimed author and poet Ty Gray-EL, a two time nominee for the Spoken Word Billboard Award. Ty has agreed to donate 50% of his sales to DCAWP.

As one of 250 DCPS teachers who joined the DC Area Writing Project (DCAWP), I am gravely concerned about its survival. The DCAWP was founded in '95 to help all content teachers become better teachers of writing. Since 1995, DCAWP was funded by the National Writing Project and matching funds from DCPS. After Chancellor Rhee decided to cut off DCPS funding, DCAWP has been struggling to survive with mini grants and fundraising projects.

If you cannot attend, but would like to make a donation, please make your donation payable to DCAWP. Mail to Howard University School of Education, Wash., DC 20059.
