FREE Exeter Academy Mathematics & Science Summer Program for Minority Students
The (MS)2 program, founded in 1977, offers 110 African American, Latino, and Native American public school students from targeted cities across the United States the opportunity to immerse themselves in the study of mathematics, science, and English for three consecutive summers at Phillips Academy. The program is free to all students who are accepted and all (MS)2 scholars begin the program the summer following 9th grade; therefore, they must be in 9th grade when they apply. The program provides the scholars with appropriate and rigorous challenges to better prepare them for college and careers in engineering, science, medicine, computers, and other technical fields.
The 2013 program runs from July 2 to August 7.
How to Apply: Competition for admission is keen. (MS)² is designed to work in tandem with the public school systems in an effort to better prepare students of color for future careers in the mathematic and the scientific fields. Candidates for admission must complete a pre-application form and return it by the deadline date.
Deadline for Applications: The pre-application form and essay must be postmarked by Nov. 7, 2012. After we receive the pre-application form, the applicant will be sent an application package containing math teacher, science teacher, and guidance counselor recommendation forms, transcript request, and Parents' Confidential Statement. The material must be completed and postmarked by December 20, 2012.
Eligibility: To be eligible for admission, a candidate must currently be in the 9th grade in a public school, must have completed one full year of algebra by June 2013, and must be a US citizen or legal resident.  In addition, the applicant must match and fit the needs of the program and vice versa. Admission will be based, in part, on the candidate's academic achievement to date, demonstration of a strong interest in science and mathematics, teacher recommendations, personal desire and motivation, and demonstrated financial need.  The program accepts applications from African-American and Latino/a students from public schools in Atlanta, GA.; Baltimore, MD.; Boston, MA.; Chicago, lL.; Cleveland, OH; Fort Worth, TX; Lawrence, MA.; Louisville, KY.; Memphis, TN.; New York, N.Y.; and Washington, D.C. Native-American students may apply from any geographic area of the United States and must meet all other program criteria.  Finalists among the applicants will be given personal interviews.
For Questions: If you have any questions about the program contact Mrs. Colleen Pelletier, Administrative Assistant, by phone at 978-749-4402 or e-mail: ms2@andover.edu

Volunteer Tutors Needed in SE and NW – For Love of Children
Nearly 75% of DC students perform at or below basic levels in reading and math.  YOU can change that! For Love of Children's one-on-one tutoring program helps students achieve grade-level competency in reading and math. In just 22 hours of tutoring, students improve an average of 1 year in reading and math skills while gaining confidence in their abilities.  Each new tutor allows us to impact the life of one more child. Training in our structured curricula and ongoing professional support from staff are provided, so no experience is necessary.  Programs are available on Saturdays, weekday evenings, and weekday afternoons at sites in NW and SE Washington, DC. Specifically, we have a critical need for volunteers at the following programs in SE Washington, DC:
• Math at Malcolm X Elementary - Wednesdays, 2:15-4:45pm

Get started by completing an application online at www.floc.org or contacting Elizabeth Metz at emetz@floc.org or 202-349-3512.  We hope you'll join us in our mission to teach, empower, and transform the lives of students in DC this year!
