[WardFive] Still Time to Respond to the 2020 Census

Good Morning Ward 5 Community!

Understandably, the census has taken a backseat in many people's minds as they process the murder of George Floyd and the countless other Black people who have been killed by police officers. And of course so many residents continue to deal with job loss, illness, or other effects of COVID-19.

Still, we know that getting counted is key to ensuring people have the resources they need to weather the pandemic and to build their communities.

You can still respond to the census - Just go to 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020.

The census allows every person to claim their right to be counted and seen. We deserve the power to build the world around us. Making sure our communities are counted helps give us a say in who leads the political institutions that have the power to protect or harm us.

The same racism that permeates our justice system has also robbed many Black communities of the resources they need and deserve. Getting counted in the census is a way to help reclaim those resources and bring in funding for health care, food, housing, and schools.

Here's an update on DC and Ward 5 response rates:

As of last week, DC had a self-response rate of 57.7%, which is about 4% less than the national self-response rate.
Ward 5 had a self response rate of 55.8%:

No census tracts in Ward 1 have reached their previous 2010 self-response rates.
Only two tracts at exceeded their previous 2010 self-response rates (87.02 and 93.01).

What's next for the census?

Soon, the Census Bureau will start sending in-person enumerators to households that have not responded on their own.
You can avoid having a census worker visit your home by responding on your own to ensure that our community doesn't miss out on our rights and resources.

If you haven't yet responded to the census, you can still do it online or by phone. The mailer you received might be buried under a pile of other mail - not to worry. Just go to 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020.

Tell your friends and neighbors that they can still respond.

No less than voting, the census builds political power and protects our civil rights.
