DC PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Dear DCPS families –
The 2013-2014 School Year has already been one for the record books. We started the school year with news about the best DC CAS scores we have ever seen. Enrollment is up in schools across DCPS. At our star-studded Standing Ovation for DC Teachers event in October, we celebrated the best and most highly effective teaching corps we have ever seen. All measures, internally and externally, clearly demonstrate that we are having a banner year. There are so many reasons to be excited about DCPS!
You might remember that in November the results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the "Nation's Report Card," were released. Today, the district level data, known as the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA), was released, and I hope you are as thrilled as I am to hear the good news. DCPS students made the most growth of students in any urban school district in the country!
What's great about these results is that they are infallible. While critics have tried to poke holes through other data points, this test is externally administered, monitored and scored. This week's results show that what we are doing in DCPS is working. Our students are growing, our teachers are excelling and we are ecstatic about today's results. I firmly believe we are making these important strides because of our strategic work to support our teachers and raise the bar for our students. We have a curriculum that teaches our students what they need to know to graduate and be prepared for college or a career.
Not only are our students growing more than students in other urban school districts in the country, we also saw all-time high scores for DCPS. The test scores were the highest they have ever been. While I am thrilled about this news, I am not surprised. When I am in schools, I see the kind of teaching and learning that I know produce these types of results. Our students are capable of achieving at the highest levels – but this is hard work that takes time. We've begun to see some results from the hard work our students, teachers and principals do every day, and I am confident this progress will continue.
Another great finding in this data is how far we've come. Since 2007, DCPS has moved up significantly in the rankings compared with other school districts. In 2007, we were almost dead last among other urban districts on this test. This year, we've jumped ahead of other districts, with as many as nine districts below us.  We're outpacing and outperforming other cities. And in our city, our students equaled or exceeded the growth made by charter school students. Education is not a competition, but this city is full of options for parents, and I want you to know why you should stay with DCPS: We are on the rise. We are moving forward and we are leading the nation.
In this season of celebration, we celebrate our students' success and gratitude for families like you. But I know this progress is only possible with your help and support. Thank you for all your hard work and efforts in our schools.  We sincerely appreciate all that you do. I hope your holiday season is one filled with joy and peace.
Fondly,
Kaya Henderson
