WE might get something accomplished if we stick with the issues

I like the approach.  However, to the extent that we, as a group believe that we could be more effective working together, and that our joint solution will have some weight; and since we already say we have too many shelters in Ward 5, why don't we consider proposing - upgrading/modernizing an existing facility, or facilities as a means of accommodating Ward 5's participation in the "All 8 Wards" concept, rather than focusing on identifying a new location?

That way - its a comprehensive approach, keeping the focus on upgrading the level and quality of services being provided and where feasible expanding and/or eliminating existing services.

Dear Neighbors,

Thanks to so many of you for coming out to the community meeting yesterday to voice your concerns about the proposed homeless shelter on 25th St. The general theme I heard was that most welcomed another shelter in Ward 5 but there was universal concern about the specific location that was proposed. The reasons why that address on 25th NE is not a good fit are many -- there are three other homeless shelters within 3 blocks of that spot already, it's a block from a strip club and numerous night clubs, it's surrounded by warehouses, there are no grocery stores or other amenities, etc.

Our challenge is finding another location in Ward 5 quickly that is truly viable. We were told the facility needs to be around 30,000 square feet. It can be leased or owned, and on private or public land, with existing buildings or not. Would you please think hard and send along your suggestions for possible locations for the homeless shelter, so we evaluate them openly with the community (in contrast to how the mayor's process was conducted) and then share those ideas with DC government?

It should be in or bordering a residential setting and could be a closed school, an old office building, an abandoned church, a dirt lot, etc.

I've got few ideas to start:

- they could incorporate it into the property where the massive condo facility will be developed east of RI Metro stop, south of 13th and Rhode Island Ave NE.

- there is a field on the northside of 13th St NE and Rhode Island Ave, an under utilized dirt lot next to the fire station.

- RI Ave has numerous buildings that seem empty or underutilized.

- incorporate it into the redevelopment area at Hechts in Ivy City

(I know these initial ideas are RI centric but that is near where I live and what comes to mind at first blush. There are 20 neighborhoods in Ward 5, I would hope we can think of ideas in each of them)

Here is a map of the Ward 5 boundaries in case that helps: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zX4PuQ4LBt0s.kGLMkxNYuQqs&hl=en_US

I'd greatly appreciate your input in this process, and as soon as possible so we still have a chance to influence what the mayor puts forward to the council for a vote.

Take care,
Jennifer
