[WardFive] Re: Statement from CM McDuffie on today's shooting near 24th and Franklin

On Monday, in response to a shooting near 24th and Franklin Street NE, Councilmember McDuffie asked neighbors to join him in standing up for our community and condemning the gun violence which we continue to experience. Below are several immediate actions you can take in partnership with neighbors and government agencies:

  • Call 911 for any concerns of Public Safety (don't assume someone else has called). The metrics for volume of 911 calls could drive several decisions such as Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) resource staffing and placement of cameras to name a few. Be as descriptive as possible (ex. color of person's clothing, vehicle color/make/model). You can request that MPD only call you back and that you do not want them to arrive at your home. If you do not leave your number or provide specifics, all MPD may be able to do is drive by. However, if you have any concerns you can always provide an anonymous tip as well.

  • Let the following Ward 5 contacts from these agencies hear your public safety concerns directly:

  • Testify before the Council Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety during the upcoming performance and budget oversight hearings. The Metropolitan Police Department has their performance oversight hearing on Thursday, January 16, 2020. A full calendar can be viewed here: https://dccouncil.us/events/ .

  • Consider creating or joining your Local Neighborhood Watch.

  • Be an active member of the 5D Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) community (meets the 4th Thursday of every month at 7pm at MPD 5D HQ 1805 Bladensburg Rd NE) The next meeting will be held on January 23rd, 2019.

As you may know our office conducted three community conversations on public safety in late Dec 2019. Our office is reviewing the feedback from the conversations and will presenting our findings, recommendations and mid and long-term strategies to address the causes and impacts of the increased violence later this month. We look forward to continued dialogue as we tackle these issues together.

For additional information or to provide feedback, please call our office at 202-724-8028.

Subject: Statement from CM McDuffie on today's shooting near 24th and Franklin

Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie has released the following statement:

"Neighbors, as many of you may have heard, I am sad and angry to report that there was a shooting this afternoon near 24th Street and Franklin Street NE. Dozens of shots resulted in at least one person losing their life, and multiple others wounded. I send my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.

We cannot and will not tolerate this kind of brazen violation of public safety. Like you, I am distraught. I am well aware of the issues in and around the location of the shooting and have been coordinating directly with MPD, ABRA and other agencies on these issues. I have also met with neighbors in living rooms and community rooms. I held three community meetings just before Christmas to address concerns about escalating violence. My staff and I had already identified the need for additional resources from multiple agencies and are working on implementation.

I continue to support the Metropolitan Police Departments and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement's efforts in the area, while also working to increase other resources, including additional violence interruption efforts that are getting off the ground in that area now.

But let me be clear, I need each concerned neighbor, parent, and business owner to join me in advocating and standing up for our community. These acts of violence are completely unacceptable and must not be normalized. I am, and every member of my staff is, committed to working on these issues until we end this gun violence. The fundamental responsibility of our government is to provide a safe environment for all residents. Today, in Ward 5, that is not happening for your family and that must change.

Please join us in this hard work."
