Want to improve every child's achievement and engagement?

Come learn about the Next Generation Science Standards - which focus on hands-on learning about broad topics like energy or climate change and include engineering practices and design for the first time.  The DC State Board of Education is considering whether to adopt these new academic standards, which eight states, including Maryland and California, have now approved.

The Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) and State Board seek your input at the first of several public feedback sessions. Join us:

Tonight, Weds. Nov. 13

OSSE - 3rd floor, Great Hall

810 1st St. NE (1 block north of Union Station)

6pm - 7:30pm

Thurs. Nov 15

Maury Elementary Home of the STEM "Think Tank"

1250 Constitution Ave NE (Capitol Hill)

5pm - 6 pm

(David Catania, chair of the Council's Committee on Education, is the PTA's featured speaker at 6 pm.)

President Obama, industry leaders, and the military have all  made STEM - science, technology, engineering, and math - education a national priority.

It's a local economic priority, too. A recent Brookings study found that 27.1 percent of Washington-area jobs require STEM skills. Only San Jose, Calif., home of Google and Apple, have a higher percentage.

Yet DC 8th grade students score so far below the lowest performing state (Mississippi) on the nation's report card that their off the chart. And the achievement gap is the country's largest.

Help change that equation. Join us in exploring these exciting new science-education frontiers.

Mary
