[WardFive] Re: [WARD5] For Your Information - U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration

Good Morning Ra:

I just heard about that from John Deckenback, the Conference Minister of the Central Atlantic Conference (CAC) of the United Church of Christ.  For those of you who might not know, the CAC, which I happen to serve as its current Board President, at this past weekend's Annual Meeting, voted unanimously to demand a change of the name of the Washington NFL franchise and to call for a boycott by its 40,000 members in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia, of games and merchandize until that happens.  The vote was reported in many major news outlets, including the Washington Post, on Sunday.  A well deserved shout-out goes to Rev. Grayland Hagler of Plymouth Congregational U.C.C., a leading voice in the CAC who has been out front on this issue for the past 20 years.

The cancelling of the trademark is likely the culminating event in this long fought battle.  This is fantastic news!

Greetings Everyone,

Congratulations to Native Americans! The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team's name "disparaging to Native Americans." The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans.

Federal trademark law does not permit registration of trademarks that "may disparage" individuals or groups or "bring them into contempt or disrepute." The ruling pertains to six different trademarks associated with the team, each containing the word "Redskin."

Salaam,
Ra
