Re: [WardFive] Re: David Grosso November Election -- Councilmembers

While I've followed along, Ive stayed out of this discussion as it had some negative undertones that were not appealing. I will however make brief comments

Rob, to the best of my memory you are in the ballpark on the numbers (I havent looked at the previous busget projections in a while) for the benefit. Much of that however from what I remember was from tax incentives not flat out cash. Which means that thr projected income or offset is based on excluding certain taxes in return for a developer making the investment in the property.

The alternative at this point is no investment or more upfront cash from the city which may be problematic for reasons such as the debt cap and other capital projects. I cant remember which year but if you check the 2011 or 2013 budget some of the numbers including early preliminary funds were included.

This however has been a great discussion whej it was kept positive.

Hello Sir Leroy,

Here you go sounding all noisy again!! You didn't like what I shared or do you want to be like my wife...drip drip drip on me until I change my mind....to influence me. No thanks! I can think very well for myself.

I didn't respond because your questions are always trying to impugn people and I really don't need your Saddam style Scud Missiles distorting the focus of our community. I thought it better on keeping the conversation on of Mobilization for McMillan but as usual, you are only interested in throwing rocks. As I shared, because they don't vote in your direction, doesn't make them wrong or bad.

I am more interested in having the ability to influence the vote when it comes up again once the Courts have nullified the current development plan for McMillan. I believe that if we have a financially equivalent proposal, we have a better chance of swaying folks to our side. But as usual, I point out something as important as I did earlier about the financing aspect, creating a viable option, and you want me to go do some ........ research on votes when you could easily have gotten of that Soapbox "pedestal"  and provided them ... if it was that important for you to share. Seriously! As a kid, my father always told me to beware of the noise in closed containers -- the more empty it is, the more the noise is. Stop distracting us.

While you are doing that, provide the rest of the votes they voted on and the bills so that we see all that was involved in the bills. Why don't you run for a seat on the City Council ...

As for the items you asked about --

As much as I was and am against the Street Car Project, I understand it. I was more so against the rush without the replacement of the existing underground utilities as well as placing those lines underground. In addition, I was definitely against the closure of Spingarm and the placement of the Street Car Repair Hub adjacent to the school and across from our First African American Golf Course. I also thought that that school cluster and land would have been the best location for a community of School maybe even a boarding school with a Competition Swim Center and High School Sports Zone..football, track, soccer, golf, basketball,etc.... a place that our city very much needed and still needs. But I know that secretly, they are planning to create a different environment for a new community there at Spingarm and Langston Golf Course!

While I am not sure that they were in the council (or there long enough) on the Street Car issue but it seems like the street car was a project that the city (mayor, developers, Anthony Williams (Federal City and the rest) were pushing backed by federal funds aimed at changing long term transportation for the city -- with the expectation that it would revitalize the H Street Corridor and the neighborhood around it; which it did.I think that Kenyan came in on the tail end and that was done before David....or he was on the very tail end...but that was a long term City move not a council member move.

Just so you understand City planning -- now that the change has started from Union Station to Bladensburg on H St., now we will have a next phase of Benning Rd to 295, the Golf Course, RFK parking lot and the rest of the neighborhood on both sides as it converges with the changes which is occurring along Minnesota Ave .... a hoodish stronghold on a depressed neighborhood on the left and right heading to East Capitol...which all needs to change. And that's just talking about the H Street Street Car.

The Stadium -- I think that the Stadium is nice. Have you been to a ball game? I think the residents, especially our kids deserve to have that as an option here in the City. Was the deal the best..I don't know but I am sure that as always, the developers got away with too much. However, that development plan was in place forever and if you look at the surrounding area, it will drive a lot of taxable income and dollars for the city. Should it be retractable ... that's your thing....I think you should find a different complaint or fund.

As for the senior tax deferral vs. exemption... I am assuming that they voted against that because it is in your craw ... but I know that this is personal to you....it probably didn't go the way that you wanted it to go. Maybe you can fully inform us on this from your perspective. I would love to discuss this vote with both Kenyan and David just so I can have some clarity after you give us the synopsis. Be sure to include the benefit to you. I assume that the bill was focused on the need of the seniors not the Donald Trump style seniors or even the well retired ones like yourself......maybe this was not beneficial to you. Let's explore who was helped by the bill as designed and who wasn't and if they really needed it.

Just like we agree on under grounding of power lines, I need you to understand that Cities have a responsibility of looking to the future and creating the space which is going to be a demand and convenient for those who will enjoy it. I did state that there must be a balance between development and green.

Hey everyone,

Now that wr are on some real discussion about the real issue
...McMillan

I remember hearing that the city is putting forth about $300 million over some years with the expectation of receiving a little over  $700 million over 30 years....inclusive of real estate tax, sales, tax, income tax, etc., (overall income from this deal).  I also previously shared that we need to understand that and our proposal should try to be inclusive of a similar return..... which is about $23 to $25mil per year. Howrver, we also have to be wary that this estimate which they have projected is a real number....the developer usually inflates those numbers to get the city to participate.

So, outside of all the illegalities which may have occurred throughout this entire process.. which a court cannot deny.. (look at 901 monroe where office of planning couldn't support even for 3 attempts), we need to give them an alternative which they cannot refuse... better green usage of the land and a return for their (city/our) investment .... remember, they are willing to put up $300 million over some years... and I believe they have a devalued approach on the land which we can utilize to leverage investment.

We should have the same $300 million at our disposal if we can get them their expected return over 30yrs.

Thank you or your kind thoughts.  I would like to say a word about undergrounding ALL electric lines.  The total cost is at least $3billion.  One billion has already been allocated.  PEPCO had made considerable progress on tree trimming to reduce storm issues.  Perhaps another 1/2 or 1 billion dollars could usefully be spent putting lines underground.  However that is not always the best solution.  Fires and other problems occur underground too, as happened on U St., NW a few years ago.  Where houses are far apart, it might make better sense to have the lines above ground where it is easy to see and repair them. Also it makes sense to have more arborists and tree trimmers doing this work for PEPCO or the city, which is cheaper and helps provide employment.

Don't forget undergrounding will be a juicy win for contractors like Council member Bonds former employer Fort Myer Construction.  Will Clark Construction that enjoyed removing 186,000 truck loads of dirt from the Convention Center foundation also benefit?  They would not have moved all that dirt if we had won the battle to put the Convention Center at the 50% larger, same price, little digging required site near Union Station.  I see that Clark is digging the foundation for the East Banc construction at 22nd and L Sts., NW.  This property valued by the city at over $100million was given to East Banc for around $18million plus the inclusion of a smaller library we no longer own.  So it goes and I'm against it.

Good thinking, Lee.

Rob, I hope you will vote for Ms. Aikin who seems to to have a better than most knowledge and understanding of the issues.
Forget Grosso and McDuffie.  You sound like someone who is struggling to hang on the fence.  You need to come down on the right side or to avoid political terms, the proper or progressive side.     BTW, you have not mentioned anything they said or did to promote green space or community character as they watch public schools being undermined by charter schools.  What was their position on the stupid streetcars which could have been electric buses?   Did they agree with spending 1 billion$ on a domeless stadium that's useless much of the year?   Did they vote for senior homeowners to get a property tax exemption or a tax deferral where they or their children would end up paying anyway?   Were they among those who accepted Walmart bribes?  A CM once asked us who were fighting Walmart intrusion, "What's wrong with Walmart?"  Talk about clueless!
How are we coming on burying power lines?  And how did they come down on the Exelon/Pepco rip off?
Can you get back to us on these questions?

As for president, we must NOT vote for the lesser of two or three evils.  Bernie Sanders was on point about changing the system.   The local corrupt system in DC also must change.

Part of the problem with DC school closings is that many residents are not aware of how Walmart's Walton Foundation funded the IFF Report which said that over 40 DC schools should be closed or repurposed (mostly as Charter Schools).  This was at the time Walmart was pushing to open 6 stores including one in Ward 7.  Now they have canceled their Ward 7 store, the area that most needed such a store, and if you read this link to Walmart Realty, you will understand exactly why they did so.  This link cynically makes clear that they don't care if their Walmart or Sam's Club stores fail so long as they can snap up prime development property when they buy out small businesses their competition has destroyed.  Ward 7 did not have the development potential available at Georgia Ave. in Ward 4.

Fortunately, the community fought the IFF Report's attempt to deprive the communities of Ward 7 & 8 of more than 30 schools.  Schools that could be used for so many other worthwhile community purposes if the Council would just fund them--adult education, low cost childcare, after school tutoring, etc.  Many do not realize that the Waltons are strong supporters of the national right wing efforts to eliminate as much government as possible, including starving public schools of needed funds.

Sir Leroy,

Just so we are clear .. I didn't give him the freedom...I was just reminding him that he has 1 vote and to make sure that he uses it. But be clear, there are lots more involved in this City other than McMillan...which I would like to see not developed the way they are currently proposing. (just so you know my position).

As for his rants ... we won't be cutting our grass with lawn mowers if it was up to Daniel. While he has a point, there is some middle ground which we have to live, pollute and be green at the same time.

As for their ideas not being good for McMillan ... I agree but they represent what the city wants as well as other constituents who wants it and maybe their own wishes on what they prefer there. Last I check, we have them in court and are doing well holding them off of developing that space in the manner which they are supporting.

As for the Schools, I don't think that the only reason is if the building is unsafe. There are lots of other reasons however, I don't think that most of the schools were given away. You really need to research that and see which ones were "given" away or leased and whether DCPS offset their renovation costs with their approach. The teacher firing was underhanded...however, some of it was for the better and some were causalities of the Charter/Public School war. Don't forget, I am well aware of the issues we as a community faced with all of this. Remember, I was the main one who identified the bait and switch on Turkey Thicket being switched into DCPS Property and now we still have Turkey Thicket being Parks and Rec and Brookland Middle being separate. I am not new to this!

And yes I know of almost everything you and Daniel have written -- so much so that I may be able to recite it at will -- lol. It is hilarious how Donald Trump Lobbied for years for tax benefits and permits and now he is angry that the same system he has pimped is working against him .. because other billionaires have deeper pockets and are against his politics!! We know that those "public servants" have mostly always given the both their ears to developers and restricted "sign language" to the citizens.

I do believe that Kenyan and Grosso is supportive of all the legislation which favors our seniors and are trying to accommodate our low income folks. DC has the best rent laws you can ask for and lots of time, these same low income folks are taking the buyouts....lot of it is their choice...and you know that I am sympathetic to both of those groups.....especially our seniors and kids.

Yes ... street cars are the dumbest but bike lanes are important. If you are considering being green, bikers are doing their part and we do need a safe space for them on the road. The issue is that we don't have regulations on them and many of them are abusive with the privilege .... many of them run stop signs, zip in and out of vehicles and are moving too fast....dangerous. We need to address those issues. But we do need bike lanes .... and truth be told, we mostly have the space for it without it affecting actual lanes for vehicles.

Can't stop development...we need to meet somewhere in the middle.

Hi Rob,

First, I'm sure Daniel appreciates your giving him the freedom "to vote for whoever you like".

Now, about his "rants"which are actually on point.   He has spoken with great passion about many issues which effect all the communities in DC.
Preserving green space, noise pollution, air pollution, mindless development, etc.   Mr. Grosso and Mr. McDuffie may be good men but they don't have good ideas about McMillan and Schools.  When McDuffie first came to office during the Michelle Rhee/Kaya Henderson education
fiasco I asked him about closing public schools.  He indicated it was an option.  I say it's only an option if the buildings are structurally unsafe. In any case they should be made safe.   Schools were given to developers and charter schools, classes were disrupted and teachers were fired.

Tough love is needed for these politicians who conduct public business like private entrepreneurs rather than public servants.  We who are the preservers of green space and community character are in constant battle with the mayors, councilmembers, office of planning, zoning, ddot/ufa, dcra, etc. not to mention developers and their friends.   Pushing seniors and low income folks out to make room for Anthony William's 100,000 invitees under the Gentrification Plan.  I know you've seen my past emails.

About the traffic,  yes they can do something about it if they are smart enough to admit streetcars and bike lanes are not a solution.
I live on R.I. Ave. a short walk down to metro where traffic is backed up more than ever since the new development.  Let them call me, I can tell them what to do.

LeROY

Hello Daniel, etal,

You are free to vote for whoever you like but I think you this push against McDuffie and Grosso is unfair. I think that both of them are doing their job...I am sure that they can always do better ... but that goes for everyone who is tasked with anything. Their beliefs may not be aligned with yours or even mine when it comes to McMillan, but it is up to us to put forth the argument for it.

As for traffic, what can they do??? People have cars and land (for the most part) will be developed....and with development, comes more residents...and yes, more vehicles!!! I sure don't need any more speed cameras or bike routes or wasted money on trolleys to nowhere!!! There is nothing that they can do about traffic...that's our decision whether to drive, to walk, to bike, to train or to stay home.

I have spoken to both Kenyan and David over the years .... they are both good people .... who might/do not share all of our opinions and/or have a different priority list ... especially when it comes to the overall priority list which politicians have for the city. So, vote for who you want to but these guys are both getting at least an A-, or maybe an A --- And I am not using a curve to grade them!!! They are both good dudes who have a different priority list than yours or even mine!

And just for the record, I would block your tweets too and I like you.....because I know you have a good heart and want to see a better world!! But be honest, your tweets and everything else goes overboard...not like anyone is protesting you or actively causing financial hardship to your business. Maybe then you would have a right to "rant"!! But you rant and become abusive just because people won't do what you want them to do....sounds like some TRUMP talk....!! You should really look at all that they are doing or trying to do before you label or try to recall them.

You should spend time putting out links like the one below so that you could recruit people to your/our side of this McMillan WATER SITE! Just imagine if we could utilize that space below to plant and utilize the water from the resovoir ..... and with a park above with theaters, fields, pools, water slides, etc.. Germantown has some amazing spaces for their communities.

https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=ILzWmw53Wwo&feature=youtu.be

You guys should continue suing the city for their lack of consistency in their building approach with no real attention to park or future green space at the most opportunistic of sites......McMillan!! Just think, the City is encouraging us to go "green" and be environmentally considerate, have active lifestyles, eat healthy, grow locally but chooses to put concrete buildings/structures one of the viable spaces for "Going Green"!!

Stay focus on that approach and stop harassing good folks like Kenyan and David! After a full day of work, they have a family and life as well. They can only do so much! And just so you know, I am not "friends" of theirs or hang out with them.....I speak to them when I see them, just like you do!! Maybe you should run for office!

Your friend,
