I had my own WWBMD moment at the put in of the North Fork at 7 am with 4 inches of snow and very very low water. Bobby said it would be good and it was so so good, I was hesitant, but glad we get it done. So sorry for being late on Saturday morning, the hike out was horrendous.

As for a recap of the Kitzmiller- I had such a great time and it was. It was so good to see everyone converge at Rattle Snake and run that rapid with minimal crashes.

I heard from instructors that we had a good amount of swims. I really don't mind swimming I have a few sayings for swimming and I don't think that anybody should ever be sorry for swimming, its how you learn and grow. Everyone swims even your instructors. I am a little concerned though that on the Cheat it might be a repeat. I know that reading and running the kitzmiller definitely pushed comfort zones which is great, the Cheat will be different as you will get more of an explanation of the lines and where the holes to avoid are, but it is harder in my opinion that the Kitzmiller. SO this weeks plan- Rolling, rolling, rolling. We are going to be rolling tonight in sticky situations to get ready for combat with the Cheat River.
This is the lesson plan:
I would like you all to roll in these spots: you must have one successful roll in each of these spots before moving to next:
In the run off of Maryland Chute, ideally while you are ferrying from the island on river right to river left. Then you can attain Md chute.

One roll in the ferry of center chute to VA Chute. Then head over to VA chute

One roll on side and one roll off in the run off at VA Chute. If don't have a off side then attempt your off side then roll on your onside, its good practice ;).

Roll in the run out of Wet bottom. if you get up to rocky island the roll on the ferry from River right through rocky island waves and eddy out in the big river left eddy where the back channels come in. Then ferry from that eddy to river right eddy hitting a roll in that ferry.

Tips: paddle with a buddy so that they might help you with a bow rescue.
Also practice your roll in the flats before getting to the moving water.

Lets have a lot of fun out there tonight and get some solid roll practice.

See you all soon.

PADDLE EVERYWHERE!

Dear Friends,
Agreed - a beautiful weekend with Calleva LAKS paddling friends. Thanks to all!

It was really fun watching people get comfortable with rock-bumps, blind ledge drops, holes, and generally creeky conditions. The Kitz provided us with a great training ground for working on creeking skills, team work, leading rapids, and running sweep. It was really fun for me to see different people getting out ahead and leading some rapids, or just picking individual lines down rapids. And, everyone was helpful and supportive with rescues - great to see! Those are the things I love best about the Cheat Training family - its all cheers and positive encouragement for each other.

I managed to get out for a second run of the Kitz on Sunday, and had a few fun moments. I was very happy to learned that Rattlesnake ledge hole can be successfully surfed and exited (by me!). I also learned that Bobby's Surprise Rapid (a few rapids after Maytag) really can catch a person (me) by surprise with that huge hole at the end! Always good to get in some whitewater rolls :)

Our group made up a new mantra to guide our river running success. WWBMD (What Would Bobby Miller Do). Side surfing in Rattlesnake ledge hole? WWBMD - enjoy the surf, and then surf out! Sliding backwards into Bobby's Surprise Rapid hole? WWBMD - yahooo! and then roll up :)

Thanks All - I can't wait for next weekend!

Yes the Kitzmiller section of the Potomac was at its best!  What a wonderful run.  Special kudos to Patrick for keeping us safe and positive.
