Great idea!
I always pick up fishing lines or hooks and shove them in my boat. I think if more people knew how dangerous they are to birds, they'd pick them up also.

It is a good question. My mom writes for the Gazette. Perhaps an article about herons and other birds getting tangled in fishing line would be a way to start talking about it?

I don't think there is much we can do. We removed as much of the line from its feet, etc as we could but it seems pretty injured. Lee told me not to try to bring it down in my boat as they can be pretty aggressive.. although it wasn't fighting us at all last night.

Last night Shelly and I saw a heron that had a fishhook through its tongue and was entangled in fishing line. It was on the MD side below Rocky where the downriver race begins- that last outcrop of rocks at the bottom of the eddy. I contacted a bird rescue person and we are going to go in tomorrow morning to try to net it. It cannot fly.
If anyone paddles by there tonight, will you let me know if you see it?
