Washington D.C. – The political organization representing over 50,000 members of the District's diverse Muslim community announced its endorsement of Drew Hubbard for Tuesday's May 15, 2012, Ward 5 Special Elections.

The endorsement of the District's Muslim Democratic Caucus follows interviews with candidates by members of the DC Muslim community.  "Hubbard stood out for his nearly decade of work as a legislative director and ultimately staff director with the DC Council.  While he is one of the youngest of the candidates, his record shows that he's the most qualified to develop legislation and attract economic development to Ward 5," said Talib I. Karim, who chairs the DC Muslim caucus.

Karim, a lawyer, media personality, and former senior official in the Gray administration believes that Hubbard possesses background to step into the job as Ward 5 Councilmember and get to work from day one, with no need for training.   "Unlike the other candidates, Drew doesn't have to read from talking points about policy and economic development written by others, he knows it, inside and out," added Karim.

Hubbard's respect for the Muslim community's religious beliefs and convictions about issues such as family, accommodation for prayer, and marriage also won over support from Muslim caucus members.

Over the next 36 hours, the Muslim Caucus plans to ensure that its endorsement is felt by mobilizing the Muslim community and its supporters in support of Hubbard.  The Caucus intends to contact its members by phone, email, and social media to spread the word to Vote Drew Hubbard for Tuesday's May 15, 2012, Ward 5 Special Elections.

It is estimated that Muslims comprise the largest number of District cab drivers.  Furthermore, Ward 5 is home to the largest number of Muslim houses of worship in the District, including the oldest, Masjid Muhammad near New Jersey Avenue, NW, which was once led by the legendary Al Hajj Malik Al Shabazz (Malcolm X).

Background: The Muslim Democratic Caucus of the District of Columbia was formed in 2008, during the historic election of President Barack Obama. As an organization, it represents the estimated 20% of DC residents who are Muslim or live in a household with a Muslim.   During the 2010 Primary elections, the Muslim Democratic Caucus endorsed five of the nine winning Democratic candidates, raised thousands of dollars and recruited dozens of volunteers for its endorsed candidates, and mobilized hundreds of votes from our community. According to Islamic tenants, Muslims participating in democratic elections are obligated to vote as a bloc based upon a consensus of the Muslim community.
