DC Collaborative donates free tickets to DC students
The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative (DCAHEC) announced today that it is footing the bill for hundreds of DC Public School and DC public charter school students and their teachers to enjoy educational enrichment events during Black History Month in Feb. and Women's History Month in March at THEARC.
THEARC is an acronym for Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus. It is located at 1901 Mississippi Avenue, SE. See map at left.
The Washington Performing Arts Society is partnering with DCAHEC to present enriching cultural art performances to DC students at the Town Hall Education and Recreation Campus.
Register for each of their 'Concerts in the Communities' as directed, below.
'Celebrate Black History Month with African Heritage Dancers & Drummers,'
Thursday Feb. 7, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Register online.
'Through dances and drumming, students learn about cultural aspects of the African Sene-Gambian people. Colorfully costumed, performers introduce and perform on a variety of African percussion instruments, and even dance on stilts. Students are invited to learn an authentic African dance.'
Also offered at THEARC for Black History Month are two free performances of 'Harriet Tubman: The Chosen One'at THEARC Theater, Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10:00-11:00 a.m. & 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Celebrate Women's History Month with dancer Ling Tang: Chinese Dancing Ribbons, Friday, March 8, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Register online.
The Collaborative explains:
'Just like the Chinese language, Chinese dance has its own unique vocabulary and structure that enable a dancer on stage to fully express her thoughts and feelings with ease and grace.
'From live demonstration with colorful costumes and props, students learn about the historical and cultural development of diverse Chinese dance vocabuaries.
'Students participate in the performance using unique dancing props such as fans, ribbons, and handkerchiefs.'
Founded in 1998, the DC Collaborative produces such exemplary programs as 'Arts for Every Student,' professional development opportunities for educators and the recently launched 'Arts Education Initiative.'
'The DC Collaborative believes that the arts—inclusive of music, visual arts, theater, dance, and literary arts—are central to the education of every student.'
When asked by Examiner if transportation costs were included, staff explained that transportation was not included, but that that schools in need could contact the DC Collaborative to apply for transportation funding.
According to educators there, The DC Collaborative is a community-based partnership organization, now 80 members strong. The Collaborative works to promote quality arts and humanities education for all DC public and chartered public schools, "for the growth of the whole child."
