DC Snow Team Continues Deployment Thru Up Coming Winter Storm, Jan. 25

Team Is Treating Residential Streets On Thursday.;

Forecast Calls For 1-2 inches Of Snow By Late Friday Night.

The District Snow Team (Department of Public Works and District Department of Transportation) is treating residential streets following today’s snowfall and monitoring major streets in anticipation of tomorrow’s winter storm.  The forecast calls for snow to begin falling Friday afternoon, continuing through late Friday night, with a predicted accumulation of one to two inches.  The District will deploy about 200 plows starting Friday afternoon.

“Thursday’s pre-dawn snowfall brought about one inch of snow,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We followed our plan of simultaneously treating the major routes, such as Suitland Parkway, Pennsylvania Avenue and Georgia Avenue, along with 82 residential routes that are particularly challenging during a snow storm,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We will focus our attention Thursday on all residential streets, which will allow us to get ahead of tomorrow’s storm.”

Director Howland added that refreezing is likely; therefore, the Snow Team will continue to treat streets Thursday into Friday to help keep the streets clear during the afternoon and morning rush hour periods.

Snow Safety and Preparedness Tips:  People driving, walking or bicycling around the District should travel cautiously. Property owners are asked to pre-treat their sidewalks with abrasives and remove snow within 24 hours of the end of the storm, and assist their elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.”  Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after snowstorms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather.  Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.
