The Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) are locally elected bodies which shall advise the Council of the District of Columbia, the Mayor and each executive agency, the Government of the District of Columbia, all independent agencies, boards and commissions with respect to all proposed matters of District of Columbia governmental policy including but not limited to decisions regarding planning, streets, recreation, social service programs, education, health, safety, and sanitation which affect the Commission area. In each of these areas, the intent of the ANC legislation is to ensure input from an advisory board that is made up of the residents of the neighborhoods that are directly affected by government action. The ANCs are the body of government with the closest official ties to the citizens in a neighborhood.

Look out for the homeless this winter. When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. Dear Commissioner Steptoe:
We thank you for always providing information that is helpful. A 3rd grader read the section in your e-mail "What is an ANC?" After reading it, she became excited because she learned and understood the duties and responsibilities of an ANC.
When information is made clear and understandable by our youth today, tomorrow we will have a more informed group of young people from across this city that may have an interest in running for an office.
The children and young people today must learn and be instructed about the things today that affect their lives. Hopefully, tomorrow having learned with understanding what it takes to build a Brave New City with Love, Justice and Peace for all, they will involve themselves in making Washington DC a Beacon on a Hill.
I remember singing with pride Washington the fairest city in the greatest land of all with gusto. This gusto and pride must be brought back and felt in the hearts of our children, our young people and our own elderly today.
