Subject: New deadline for National Youth Science Camp: START application by 3/1

Just learned that there is some flexibility in the application - as long as students START their application by MARCH 1, they can complete it and still be considered for selection. Please spread the word!

Here, again, is the pitch:

Do you have an aspiring scientist, engineer, computer programmer, or mathematician in the graduating class of 2013?

Please encourage him or her to apply to represent the District of Columbia at the prestigious  National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia this summer.

Students who START their application by the MARCH 1 deadline can have extended time to complete it and will still be eligible for consideration by the selection committee.

The application is entirely online and can be accessed at:  http://apply.nysc.org

There are four parts: a letter/personal narrative from the student describing his or her academic and career aspirations and leadership in the community; a resume; a transcript; and a letter of support from a teacher.

The National Youth Science Camp is a 3.5-week residential program that brings two graduating high school leaders selected from each state to a beautiful campus in the woods near Bartow, West Virginia, to enjoy outdoor adventures, doing science projects, and meeting young science and math leaders like themselves from around the nation and world.

Camp alumni include Nobel Laureates, astronauts, business leaders, and members of Congress. Past District of Columbia delegates have called it a life-changing experience.

I hope at least one of your students will apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As a lapsed college chemistry major and DC state board of education's science committee chair, I'm passionate about seeing more students - particularly young women - pursue STEM degrees and careers.

All the best,

Mary
