[WardFive] Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program

District's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Opens October 1, 2014

(Washington, DC) - The District of Columbia's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open to District residents Wednesday, October 1, 2014 with the following schedule:

October 1 - 13, 2014 for electric disconnections only

October 14 - 28, 2014 for gas disconnections only

October 29 - November 12, 2014 for electric and gas disconnections, and heating oil emergencies.

All residents whose utilities have been disconnected must apply for assistance at either one of the city's two energy centers, located at 1207 Taylor St., NW, Suite 101 or 2100 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., SE, Suite 404. Residents in Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 should go to the Taylor Street location in northwest for assistance. Residents in Wards 6, 7, and 8 should go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. office in southeast for assistance. Appointments are not required to apply for emergency assistance.

Residents who are not currently experiencing an electric or gas disconnection, or heating oil emergency, but need assistance, must make an appointment. Residents should call 311 on October 1, 2014 to schedule an appointment for non-emergency energy assistance. Appointments will begin on November 13, 2014.

All residents must bring the following documents with them when applying for assistance.

Your disconnection notice
Your most recent utility bills (or a copy)
Your government-issued ID
Proof of income for everyone in your home who receives income
Social security cards for everyone in your home or an official document containing the Social Security number of all household members.
