[WardFive] [Brookland] Article on McDuffie

Good evening,

As a former Commissioner 5B01 and Chair of 5B, it was hard to get people to come to meetings unless they had a personal issue they wanted/needed our support.

I will ask people in the community not to sign a petition but support CM McDuffie.   Do not stand for this action against him!

All,

I'm guessing the City Paper story was written based on a filing with the D.C. Board of Elections, which is required by law to approve a recall petition before anybody can sign it. If you want details, I suggest getting in touch with the elections board next week to find out the status (which sounds as though it's very early in the process).

There are extremely strict rules in D.C. for recalling an elected official. You might also want to Google the procedure.

All,

I have spent months attempting to work with McDuffie's office on a couple of issues, with NO actual action.  Their favorite response to me is, "thanks for reaching out" .., as if it is a social matter, and as if I don't have anything better to do.

I'm happy to sign, but need the link.

For that matter, I would sign on the same petition for Grosso, who only sends out requests for money and announcements for meet and greets on a regular basis.  Again, no response when real issues are brought directly to his attention.

Sincerely,

Jeff on Newton

Marchant,

To me it isn't the mere fact that he's marching in the parade in Ward 3.  It's his overall focus.

In the past few weeks his staff have put more emails on the listserv about getting people to march than they have in the past few months about addressing our concerns about a whole range of concerns.  Even the Mayor's office is better by light years about answering queries from constituents and being both responsive and proactive on the listserv.

It's the contrast between him and his staff putting such effort into "being pumped up" about his electioneering in a parade in the most affluent and least crime-ridden Ward in the city, and his complete lack of being "pumped up" about constituent service to those of us here in Brookland and, I assume by extension, the test of Ward 5.

I think you yourself see the conflict.  Because while you say in one paragraph that he's not ignoring the Ward and its residents, you say in the same email: "Yes, I have been frustrated with his seeming reluctance to take a position till he absolutely has to.  And I would love to get ANY [emphasis added] acknowledgement to the letters and calls . . . ."

All, Not to be seen as an apologist for Councilman McDuffie, but the mere fact he and Silverman are marching in the Palisades parade does not seem to me to be the measure of ignoring the Ward that it might appear.  I have no doubt that if Ward 5 had a parade as long standing as the Palisades one, he would come to that one too.  Yes, I have been frustrated with his seeming reluctance to take a position till he absolutely has to.  And I would love to get any acknowledgement to the letters and calls and see him take a firmer stand against the rapaciousness of the developers.

But he did do the right thing and step up to save the Brookland green, and clean up the paint spray booths on RI Ave.  He did work to kill the site for the homeless shelter arguably in one of the worse locations that could have been selected.  Yes, we would all like to reduce crime in our neighborhood.  And yes more visible cops would make us feel better but it is unclear to me whether doubling the level would make a lot of difference.  I would love to be wrong about that.  But Councilman McDuffie's ability to turn around a punk culture of violence is limited.  So I do not share the thoughts of some that he is ignoring Ward 5.

What is the group referenced in the article? Anyone know who/what it is? I couldn't find anything online.

It would be nice if "his team" showed as much interest in his own Ward and its problems on July 4th as in going to march in a parade in one of the richest areas of Ward 3 to bolster a Councilman who has shown little if any concern for our own Brookland neighborhood.

I hope that answer meets your criteria, although I'm sure I'll somehow be accused of somehow violating one of them by someone.

All your comments go hand in hand with this email today.....

I just don't understand. What is the Palisades parade? Why should I walk? For whom? Who has done what  for my community exactly?

Please, somebody just give me one good non sarcastic, non demeaning, non racially motivated on or not on purpose good reason to spend my time being part of this. I'd like show support for ward 5 but I need a reason.

See email below.

Dear Residents,

Please join Teams McDuffie and Silverman on Monday, July 4 for the 50th annual Palisades Parade and Picnic. Our teams are pumped up and you should be too! We would love to have you walk with us in the parade this year to show your support.  Although the parade starts at 11:00 am, if you are interested in walking with us, please arrive at Whitehaven Parkway via Foxhall Road at 10:00 am. You will see our red and white Ward 5 Team McDuffie t-shirts!

Following the parade, enjoy the picnic at the recreation center with hotdogs, watermelon, drinks, live music and moon bounces. This is certainly an event that you do not want to miss!

For further information, please contact Wesley Dawson at (202) 478-2457 to sign up. On the day of the event, please contact Wesley at (202) 288-0714 (cell).

We will see you there.

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing. It doesn't surprise me one bit. I hate to say it, but he's really done nothing including *not responding* to his constituents regarding matters of safety and security in the neighborhood. If you want to represent your community, you need to be out in the community. You need to listen to our problems and you need to respond with decisive action. There has been no action, except that one time I saw him wandering the aisle's of Costco.
