RE: cheat_training_group Fall Training / 1st Gauley Trip! [GAULEY MAP ]

Enclosed is a Gauley map from a couple years ago - pretty much same as the one Jen sent out for this year - that I annotated with some mileages at key turns to the various put-in and take-out locations…along with a few churches, which are great landmarks - and for which you probably could get some GPS coordinates.  No ABSOLUTE guarantees, but I think the annotations are accurate.  Hope it's of some use.  Enjoy your paddling this weekend!

Hi Jenn,

 

I looked at the AW websites but they use a stripped-down version of Google maps that doesn't let you extract GPS coordinates or generate maps from different starting locations, and I would like to generate a map from Gauley Fest to the Masons putin.  Also, I have a Garmin GPS that often will work in places where my phone has no GPS/data reception.

 

GPS coordinates like we had for river trips in Cheat Training make it much easier to calculate drive times, generate maps, and navigate mountain roads without holding a map in one hand.  But that's just me…  J

 

I'm looking forward to the fun paddle!

Hey Bill, the AW website has putins and take outs. Your GPS probably wont work anyhow, so make sure you have directions somewhere you can get to them without relying on internet at all. I suggest you print them hard copy, or take a pic with your phone. Just note that the Bucklick Branch isn't used anymore. Upper ends at Mason, and that's where Lower starts. 

 

Gauley - 7 (Upper). Summersville Dam to Mason Branch

 

Gauley - 8 (Middle). Mason Branch to Bucklick Branch

 

Gauley - 9 (Lower). Bucklick Branch to Swiss

Bill,  I don't know the coordinates for the Mason Branch put-in, but it is clearly marked shortly before the turn to Wood's Ferry.  The Mason Branch turn is often controlled so that only busses can enter, and I expect that to be happen,  in which case we will put-in at Wood's Ferry.

After wrestling with the logistics Helen and I decided to camp at the Fest and join the crew for paddling on Saturday, but we will skip Sunday paddling …  Helen can get back home to catch up on schoolwork.  We're bummed about missing camping with Tom and Steve-O (call me for beer) and the rest of the folks staying at Tawney.

Does anyone have thoughts on what the drive time might be during Gauley Fest from the Fest campground to the Middle put-in at 9:30am?

Hi Fall Trainers,

 

This coming weekend is our first Gauley Trip! Get excited, 'cause it's Gauley Fest, too!! Steve-O and Tom will be leading you this weekend. They are driving up Friday and we will be camping both nights at Tawney Farm (directions here). We plan to eat breakfast in camp so plan to bring food for the morning and to make yourself a lunch to eat on the river. We want to leave the campsite at 9 am. 

 

You can also chose to drive up Saturday morning. You will need to be at the put-in to the Middle Gauley, Mason's Branch, at 9:30 am. (directions on AW).

 

We will eat dinner out on Saturday night. Sunday the group will split. Plan to eat breakfast at 7 am at Mabel's Restaurant in Mt Nebo so don't stay out too late!!! 

 

The group going so far is Bill and Helen Geary, Jon Zeidler, Lisa, Mike A, and Ucilia.  

 

We are not planning to go to Gauley Fest. If you guys want to stop by Saturday evening or even camp there and meet us in the morning, that is fine. Please just let us know your plan- when you will arrive, whether you will camp at Tawney Farm, how many nights. I need to let the campground know how many to expect. If you guys want to work out carpooling, we can start a seperate email chain.

 

For the rest of the Fall Trainers, Jen Sass will be leading a workout on Saturday 9/17, meeting at 9 am at Lock 5 again.  Please do email whether you will come.
