September Nutrition Tip: Creating a Healthy Eating Lifestyle

Eating healthy as we age requires developing healthy habits. Below, we offer a few guidelines for creating those habits:

-Eat Less-processed Food: We should all focus on eating food that has been minimally processed, but what does that mean? It means we need to eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible. An example would be to eat an orange instead of orange juice. Another example would be to eat a baked sweet potato instead of sweet potato fries.

-Be Careful With Seasonings: For example, you could use fresh herbs and vegetables instead of butter, flour, or fish-fry seasonings. Try fresh slices of onion or bits of minced garlic with a good squeeze of lemon.

-Try New Snacks: Break the apple and banana routine by trying colorful berries and melons. Make every effort to eat 2-3 servings of fruit daily. When selecting fruit, fresh is best. To prevent fresh fruit from spoiling or losing nutrients, have a plan in place for how you will consume fresh fruit daily.
