[WardFive] Excited and Encouraged: Hopefully, A New Era in Public School here in Washington, DC

Good Morning Chancellor Wilson,

I read your promise to visit all 115 schools before the school year is out and I think that is an awesome promise.

A suggestion -- maybe, you could do your best to visit a school and greet students as they arrive ... let's say twice or three times a week...of course, unannounced!! Pay a surprise visit and have a sign up that you are the new chancellor. Do your best to greet each student, Teacher and Staff Member and leave them (in their hand) with contact information which they (or their parents) can contact you any need, want, suggestion, issue, praise, likes, dislikes, etc. As you are already aware, you are not only responsible for the curricullum but also from the water they drink, the food they eat, the air they breathe ... the overall environment. As a Chancellor, I would want constant feedback on all of it, bad and good...and directly from the source...our kids, Teachers, staff, parents and security!

Maybe you (if you don't have one already) can appoint a staff member specifically to manage your contact with students. I would add Teachers and staff but I am sure that they have a line of communication. As a student and even a Teacher or general staff member, I would love to arrive at school and be greeted by the Chancellor!

This approach will help create an excitement buzz in our schools on all levels (I would be "buttoned" up coming to school everyday) as well as create a level of personal care and attention from the top -- which I personally feel that our kids have been missing. I believe that we need to increase the level of excitement (along with our usual focus on mundane policy and) with how DCPS already show our kids that we care about them and their education! I am sure with all the technology available, your travelling assistant and Central Office staff, you could squeeze some time into your schedule for this approach!

If I was a Chancellor, I would do my best to be in touch with one of my primary responsibilities on a consistent basis (once or twice a week) --- first thing in the morning! That's the type of culture I would want to create! As the CEO of DC Public Schools, let your schools be your targeted "Golf Courses" at which you do business and allow your/our kids, Teachers and other Staff members to be the other CEO's you are discussing business with! That's where the delicate touch needs to be .... on the Green or the surrounding short game area!

Best,

Rob Ramson
